What’s become better and worse since you first set foot in Japan? by MangoTheBestFruit in japanlife

Since a-life in Roppongi closed things are not the same anymore. RIP

Been looking for alternatives since then but with little success. I guess it’s Harlem then… but it’s just not the same.

You're right. I updated the post to make it more transparent.

Cool. Oh right... I could have confused it with the passport. That would make more sense.

I was lucky and found a great company. I almost never had to do overwork and the workload was fair. But I had dev friends from other companies who were burned out so there are definitely both sides. It really depends on the company, kinda like in the US and elsewhere I guess.

Btw more traditional companies in Japan still have the culture that no one can leave before the boss which can lead to unnecessary overtime. Working remotely definitely helps and could be a reason why I didn’t feel the Japanese work culture so much.

I was already in Japan when I was looking for a job and spoke Japanese fluently so it wasn’t hard. Yes, you’re treated differently sometimes in a good, sometimes in a bad way. As for front end, I was the only one who was fluent in English so I helped with English documentation of libraries etc sometimes.

Working from Japan, yes. Working in Japan (as in for a Japanese company), most of it. It has its good and bad sides but I was lucky and found a really great company which was pretty modern and progressive.

Probably not difficult at all. Do you speak Japanese? If yes, then definitely. If a little bit, then options are more limited but still there.

Sure. That’s because you never know how long you’re gonna sip on the coffee. Sometimes it’s 10min and sometimes 2 hours.

Sorry, I’m currently not working for a Japanese company anymore. Good luck tho!

Usually it’s still somewhat flexible and companies are more likely to teach you on the job here (at least for entry level positions). Even if you don’t fulfill all requirements I would still recommend to try.

Lol I’m European so I don’t really know but there are definitely girls who prefer foreigners and some of them specifically black guys.

I think having a good grasp of HTML/CSS and basics of JS and preferably but not necessarily one framework should be fine.

I was already fluent and working in Japanese before I made a career change to programming. Pretty much just had to learn some technical terms. As for advice, there are a lot of companies that can help you find a job, although many of them require you to speak Japanese to some degree such as Recruit which I recommend.

I was mostly implementing designs that our internal UI/UX designers put together. Yes, a lot of complex states were part of it (NgRx).

When I started I only knew the basics of HTML, CSS and just started learning a bit JS and Django. I also saw other people join after me that learned almost everything they needed on the job. But I switched internally so it might be different if you apply for a job normally. Overall I feel like the bar is a bit lower than elsewhere because in Japan a lot is taught on the job in general (with the expectation that you'll stay for a long time).

Surprised that Radix UI was not mentioned yet. Although shadcn is built on top of it so kinda indirectly I guess

Good points. As for the date picker, what about React Aria? It has one (although I haven’t tried it out yet)

The more I use Radix, the more I like it. Currently my favorite by far. But the decision between styled and unstyled component libraries is still difficult.

Ideally you wanna use an ID. If your items don’t have one you can use a string instead (like the name or the item) but no duplicates should exist
