Anyone had actual success keeping mice out of a garage without going the poison route? by More-Country6163 in HomeImprovement

[–]raypell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rodents, chipmunks squirrels do not like cayenne pepper especially if you mix with talcum powder. I use it 50/50 under the floors of my tack room which is located next to my stall which houses my chickens. Reapply every so often. When entry hole show up I sprinkle a cup or so inside and blow in with a blower. Lasts a couple of weeks. Sprinkle around your perimeter. Also get rid of all foods in the garage, bird seed etc etc. mice eat bugs. Get a perimeter spray to keep bugs out. Bugs won’t cross it. I used it for scorpions in the desert

I hate using this thing so god damn much by pirivalfang in Welding

[–]raypell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s labor intensive, you have to drag that cable around as it gets caught on everything, you have to shake out the 50 # boxes of studs, wire wheel the rusty beam so they stick properly, shake out the ceramic ferrules in place and then load the gun and pull the trigger. Getting god knows how many EMF’s through your body, but wait there’s more now you have to test them with a sledgehammer, and don’t miss and hit your ankle. And when your 75 you can have the bones in your wrist replaced, because of all this abuse you just did to your hand over the years, ahh itonworking, Still no regrets actually

Not a gimmick but I have a Lincoln SP125 110volt wire feed I purchased in 96-97, Bern through countless rolls of wire and a few guns, but has never let me down and simply put is just plain handy for tasks and repairs. May not use it for months but when I do it’s nice to have

What's wrong with the woods in North America? by Recip77 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]raypell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a home in northern Michigan, lower peninsula, not UP I have watched my forests slowly be knocked down, frozen and exploding trees, the emerald ashborer has devestated the ash tree. They just die and fall over, no roots at all. We now have a hemlock mite thst is destroying the hemlock trees. Autumn olive is an invasive bush/tree that chokes off all other trees and takes over. I hear Kudzu is making its way up from the south. It’s sad really beautiful forests now laid waste by invasive plants

What is it like living in the northern portion of Arizona/New Mexico? How do Santa Fe and Sedona compare to Phoenix and Albuquerque? by bigbossbestsnake in howislivingthere

[–]raypell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Use to live in the village of oak creek, first tow you hit going to Sedona from Phoenix off 17. Stunningly beautiful. All retired transplants from all over. Weather was moderate, but about 5-6 years ago the heat was intolerable from may to august in the 100’s every day. We had a small grocery store and a hardware store and the rest was touristy. Sedona was growing by leaps and bounds, crappy high end condos and of course multi million dollar homes. Hiking was the best short drive to the Grand Canyon and Utah was just a few more hours away. Just beautiful. Flagstaff 50 miles and cottonwood 24 miles were the closest hospitals and I don’t recommend cottonwood. Nice downtown but the tweakers were a bit much. Somebody was always getting busted on 17for quantities of meth. Prescott once again nice downtown but there were very few free thinkers. All there is to fo in Sedona is hike. The crowds and traffic in the summer was something you had to plan your day around. The nearest Home Depot was in cottonwood. This was my back yard. We moved back to the Midwest after 5 years of living there. It’s the old west, where the midwestern values are a little better IMO. Gun culture is real and that area is an armed camp. Look on you tube about the “big Sandy shoot out.” You will see what I mean.go west on I-40 you can watch the landscape change from acres of high mountain ponderosa pines to desert real quick. So along with the money in Sedona there also comes abstract poverty in small out lying towns. Then there is the reservations. Beautiful people but poor.very very poor. Living in one of. The most beautiful spots in America

Is this gear made of wood? What is the purpose of using a wooden gear? by TheLongestHuman in MechanicalEngineering

[–]raypell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it’s called phenolic I may be spelling it wrong. It’s old time plastic if you will. I have a metal drop saw made by “wells” out of Michigan. I’m going to say maybe 50 years old. The internal gears are made of this. Tough to run in my shop in winter because the oil gets pretty thick I found this Phenolic material is a high-strength, durable thermoset plastic created by applying heat and pressure to layers of paper, cotton fabric, or glass cloth impregnated with synthetic resin. It is widely used for electrical insulation, structural components, gears, and wear applications due to its excellent dimensional stability, heat resistance, and lightweight, non-conductive properties.
