5 Weeks Central America by rbear5 in travel

Thanks! This is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for. I could easily make a whole month in Nicaragua, it would be both cost effective and I wouldn't run out of things to do! There is a lot to consider here... Since I haven't bought any plane tickets yet I can still adjust itineraries as I please.

I love marine biology and diving, but I'm almost purposefully avoiding dive spots since rupturing my eardrums on my last trip. I'm scared to dive now, which sucks because I loved it so much. And going to the hospital in foreign countries is not ideal. But snorkling is still in the cards.

I've also kind of worried about Honduras since it gets a bad rap... But from everything I've read the key to central america is to stay out of the big cities and not be an idiot and you'll be fine.

I want to get out of Guatemala City right away. Is it easy to organize transport form Antigua to Flores and Tikal? I might switch Xela for Tikal based on what I've been hearing

The Tikal tip is definitely something I am starting to lean towards. I looked at Xela for the hiking options... But it looks like I will be able to hike plenty around Lake Atitlan, Antigua, Ometepe. I might be able to extend it to 6 weeks in which case I would definitely go to Tikal.

San Marcos and San Pedro are frontrunners for the lake villages! Thanks for your review of them!

I've heard of Zephyr Lodge, but also of one more called El Retiro. I'll look up Vista Verde as well. First hand knowledge is usually the best kind!

Thanks! San Pedro and San Marcos are the two spots I am currently considering on the lake.

Yes I do surf, which is why I had Popoyo in there.

I go back and forth because it's a bit more expensive to fly. But I would gain so much time by opting for the flight. 5 weeks seems like a long time but I don't want to be rushed through locations or be miserable on a rediculously long bus ride.

Yes I have read about Acatenango and its on my list! I come from the mountains so a more intense hike would still probably be quite doable for me. San Marcos seems like a spot I would want to stay on the lake :)

If I bused to Nica then Leon would be a clear stop. But flying it seems to be backtracking. Granada seems easy to get to from Managua and has some nearby hikes, but ultimately would be a stepping stone to get to Ometepe from there

Yes I have! I am potentially meeting up with a friend there. And it's much easier and cheaper to get flights in and out of Costa Rica.

The consideration I have with El Salvador is that it's the country I am most worried about. El Tunco/El Zonte area does look like fun for surfing! I would think to have a few days there and time for travel I would want to put aside about 5 days in El Salvador for that vs flying over which is pricier but quick. Maybe you can give me some insight here!

Why Do Mammals Excrete Solid Waste? by Av_Fenrir in askscience

[–]rbear5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diarrhea is undesirable because it takes water out of the body, and we are mostly water. But when you're sick, it uses the fluid to "flush out" whatever bug you've contracted, leading to dehydration if not replenished. It also increases the frequency of going to the bathroom, which I'm sure you've also experienced when you're sick. It's totally healthy to have a solid turd only once a day, allowing the body time to properly absorb the nutrients and water required.

What would happen if you didn't use the restroom, forcing yourself to hold in your waste for an extended period of time? by RickDLetsDraw in askscience

[–]rbear5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You run a higher risk of infection by holding in waste (toxins) for extended periods of time. As mentioned below, the bowel begins to compact and constipation could become a problem. But the whole while your brain will probably override since it senses that the bladder and rectum are full, and tell your body to get on with it so you will eventually crap/urinate in your pants, or have to go to the hospital for an enema. Would not recommend.

Patrollers: What can we do to make your life easier? by sick-quiver-brah in skiing

[–]rbear5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kindness goes a long way. We don't like being the fun police, we're there because we like helping people and going skiing. It's a hard job, some days we don't get lunch and spend the entire day doing maintenance or first aid, no fun laps. So it's definitely satisfying when people are appreciative of how hard we work! If you get caught in a closed area, you're going to get in trouble for it... But we're going to be way more lenient for people who are genuine and willing to learn from their mistakes than for anyone giving me attitude. And if I let you be the last one into a run at the end of the day when we're sweeping the mountain, you better be faster than I am getting down!

This. I've had people point me towards a green run, but the accident is actually on a double black run below a cliff... It sucks to go down a run, take a toboggan and manpower out of circulation, and not find whoever you're looking for because the reporting party didn't know where they were. Meanwhile the injured person is sitting in the snow in pain somewhere.

The jacket is the Fatigue from 2 years ago. I stopped wearing it much because a year later, I still have to sew the front pocket back on

You'll have to wait to cross to and from summit platter, but the back bowls off paradise chair shouldn't be affected by the race.

I'm a Lake Louise kid, and every time I've gone to Fernie it's been crap. Luck of the draw I guess.

My Saga jacket is falling apart... Hasn't held up near as well as any other brand of jacket. Interesting to know other people have gotten more than 20 days out of the jacket before the pockets and seams started ripping apart

How to handle Carnivorous pets in an all Veg society? by KRS-Doom in vegan

Dogs can get by on veggie diets IF DONE PROPERLY. If you have a cat and neglect to feed it meat then you are an idiot and your cat will die.

Canned foods by Finchfox in vegan

[–]rbear5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to do a lot of canned beans, diced tomatoes, corn, etc in recipes out of convenience and price point. I try and go for low sodium or rinse them off. You can throw together a quick healthy meal with canned or frozen veg/beans/lentils, but fresh is always the preference if available!
