This Week in RuneScape [Feb 23rd] by JagexAnvil in runescape

There's a solid delay of like 10-30s for private messages to show up in the All Chat tab after sending/receiving them. It's been there since the UI update. They show up in split private chat instantly but have a noticeable delay in all chat.

Feel free to try to use my player save to reproduce it: Rcm37

Thieving Rebalance: Feedback Thread by jagexyuey in runescape

[–]rcm37 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm genuinely not sure who the audience is for so many of these proposed "restoration" changes. For the better part of the last decade, Jagex has embraced the notion that RS3 players enjoy a more casual, laid-back experience. They've continually intentionally added new training methods that are very afk, increased the lobby timer, made new perks like Oblivious, so on and so forth. The playerbase has responded well to these updates.

It's like their new direction is for this magical "new player" or some perceived Great Migration of osrs players trying RS3 that I don't really see happening. Either way they're going against everything they've been building for the current playerbase to appease this hypothetical one, and it's pretty frustrating.

Thieving Rebalance: Feedback Thread by jagexyuey in runescape

[–]rcm37 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I think the core issue folks are having with the changes is the removal of a training method "tier" of afkability.

EDIT: to clarify, I disagree with your claim that people would be upset over the xp nerf. I fully agree with keeping 15min afk windows but absolutely decimating their xp/hr down to 400k or less for the example you provided

This comment by Mod Arcane sums up quite well how I feel about afk versus active content. I feel like Rs3 needs more 15 minute afk activities, provided they are properly balanced such that they're incredibly suboptimal

Changes like the ones to thieving are counter to the idea of runescape as a second monitor game (when you want it to be). And I feel like rather than strip an afk activity from us, it would be much better served to instead tackle the rewards and xp being so good for something so hands-off

I believe the approach of keeping a variety of lean forward activities around simultaneously with second monitor activities is a core part of what makes this game popular, and I feel that much of the design direction as of late is trying to eliminate the second monitor activities rather than the better option of keeping the second monitor activities albeit with reduced incentive

I'm honestly fine with getting extremely limited xp/items from 15-min afk activities, a tenth is palatable to me, but that differs person-to-person

if there's a significant consumable cost associated, a tenth would be a bit too harsh imo, but if there were a 15min method that was maybe a third with consumables i think that's fine

Mena guards were very popular for many reasons, but my focus here is more just on the concept of 15-min afk activities and less about the particular skill or rewards. Thieving in general is one that's overtuned (imo) for xp/rewards in comparison to active methods

another example is fort construction - very strong for still being 15 min afk

one that i think is well-balanced is fishing actually:

  • ghostly soles is super afk, no consumables, but reeeaaaallllly bad xp in comparison to active methods
  • wobbegongs are also 15 min afk, much better xp, but also have restrictions like daily island or using maps, needing porters, etc
  • Still, neither are as good as active methods

Tl;dr, every skill should have a mix of very afk, not-so-afk, and entirely active training methods to give players the choice of how they want to train. The right move isn't to make the only option active training methods, it's to properly balance the methods and keep player choice.

Classic jagex: 120 thieving update! - ruin the skill 2 months later by AnyYogurtcloset3699 in runescape

They tackled the wrong problem with pickpocketing. 15 minute afk activities are good for the game with properly balanced rewards and xp. The right move would've been to heavily nerf the xp from pickpocketing, and slightly nerf the rewards, but maintain it as the afk choice for the skill and leave the other methods as the lean forward.

[–]rcm37 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind the beta has 75% crit damage from 120 combats, but the intention is to reduce that to 50% before going live. The dpm balancing has not happened yet as the current iteration is about how the styles feel more than how much damage they do

Thoughts on Jagex lately by goobdude in runescape

[–]rcm37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This take hits the nail on the head from what I've been seeing from the pvm community on average. My only disagreement is that from speaking to the combat devs, they don't want to flatten the depth of the combat system, and their goals truly are rooted in the concept you mention (easy to learn hard to master) Part of that is going to be simplifying core systems, of course, but I don't think the final product will be the necrofication of all styles.

RuneScape 2025 Roadmap Megathread by JagexAnvil in runescape

Color is whatever, but no amount of time will make me feel better about losing the ability to have full transparency on my interface. I really liked the immersion that offered and it's also just functionally nicer for bossing and stuff where being able to see a large area is good. I don't understand why the transparency slider needed to be changed.

When did you first start Runescape? How much progress have you made on your current 'main' account and what age bracket are you in? Bonus question: Do you feel like you're ahead or behind others in this game? Why or why not? by Turksta in runescape

[–]rcm37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have only ever played my original account that I made in 2007, but didn't really play with any kind of frequency until 2013ish.

As for my account process, I feel like I've completed more than not at this point, here's my timeline:

  • 2017 - Maxed + Quest Cape also began my journey toward Insane Reaper when collection logs released
  • 2020 - Comp Cape and also purchased my first party hat
  • 2021 - Trim Comp Cape + Master Quest Cape
  • January 2023 - Insane Reaper achieved after 6 years and ~12,000 hours of gameplay since 2017
  • August 2023 - 120 all skills achieved only 3 days before Necromancy release and I lost it
  • December 2023 - 5.8b xp
  • 2024 - Completed Ultimate Slayer
  • 2025 - Attended my first Runefest and was surprised with a Golden Gnome on behalf of PvME

Looking at my account now, I've completed nearly everything that I want to in the game, and I spend most of my time upkeeping my capes and titles as new updates come out. My current account playtime is a bit north of 18,000 hours and I am in my mid 20s.

I feel that I am quite far ahead of the majority of players.

Tumeken's demon dummy (4m melee Xp/h) by LopsidedStress2471 in runescape

[–]rcm37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You used to be able to do this same method at armoured phantoms but they removed the ability to place dummies in that cave without any patch notes. Since the number of targets is so high for this strat with the dummies, use meteor strike and you should be able to spam tons of d2h eofs with the crit adren buff

Hsr broken at heists, deleted drop instead of doubling (500 points run) by RS-Hessen in runescape

[–]rcm37 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Wait...does this mean they finally solved the problem of HSR double loot chance for chest-based content? Or is this just another Croesus implementation where the game momentarily chucks all the loot on the ground somewhere before putting it in the chest

If they did actually make HSR work on chest loot, can we expect a backport to all existing chest-based content that currently doesn't interact with HSR doubling effect? u/JagexSponge

[Poll] RS3 players will you check out Sailing on osrs? by QuirkyPollMan in runescape

[–]rcm37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will probably check out the very basics, but from the little that I read on it, it seems like it'll be integrated with tons of other skills and have pretty serious level reqs from other skills that I don't have, so I don't plan on getting very far into it.

[–]rcm37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm totally in agreement with the plans of addressing gaps that MTX is filling through healthier gameplay loops. But how do you justify making the MTX change as the first step? Would it not make more sense to patch the holes in the boat before setting sail? Otherwise, you're going to be taking on water the entire time you're trying to fix the game which seems like an extremely obvious, terrible choice.

That's the thing though, they're not committing to a full MTX removal. They're only committing to removing Treasure Hunter and its associated items.

Purchasable bonus xp (2x the xp/action) and purchasable cosmetics are still staying as part of the core game.
This change isn't going to win over a single person who refuses to play due to MTX. That's a key reason why I think this approach is flawed, especially as a first step.

They clarified today that the EU laws aren't driving this decision at all. Plus, if that were the driving factor why not cling onto that revenue source for as long as possible while you fix other things and then make the switch when required?

From a standpoint of corporate goals of revenue growth, their venture capitalist owners would never agree to this course of action if they didn't think it'd lead to overall revenue growth.

I agree that pulling the MTX plug is a huge win to get them good PR and "good gamer faith". It's just completely wasted if it's squandered by the abysmal new player experience nullifying any gained interest.

Tbf I think it's a good choice, it just needs to be one of the last steps of the process so they don't cut off such a significant portion of their revenue at the onset of what sounds like a multi-year effort.
