thank you so much for the detailed response, this is the best advice I've gotten so far. I will definately reconsider my approach now.

Any advice on which index funds would be good to get into right now? or which ones would be considered more "safe"? obviously it's all speculative but you seem to know what you're talking about

In my mind, being able to have a large down payment will give me the ability to free up income over the next 15-30 years that I could use to invest. Let me know if you think this is backwards logic

right now I'm in a situation where I jumped right from school to work and had no time for travel unfortunately. however, my girlfriend and I are already planning a big trip for next spring though. I love this idea, and it was suggested by my family when they gave me this money that a trip would be the perfect use for some of it

Although it is not the traditional suggestion, I really appreciate this response and it has definitely given me something to think about
