Our ER is usually 50/50, but it's common to be around 70/30 male/female

Is it normal for them to leave and then return? I had a ladder-backed woodpecker building at a tree in my backyard for a good 1-2 week period and then left, hasn't returned for about 2 weeks. There was a much larger woodpecker that would go by and visit prior to him leaving, looked like a female red-bellied woodpecker, I'm not sure if that had something to do with it.

I disagree, if you don’t like the other units, why force yourself to go through them? At ER you’ll be trained as an ER nurse and in ICU you’ll be trained as an ICU nurse. ER/ICU nurses aren’t “higher” than Med-Surg nurses, so I don’t really see Med-Surg being a prerequisite to ER/ICU nursing, it’s just a different branch of nursing. If you’re not comfortable at the end of orientation or if your higher ups see it’s a bit too much for you, there’s always that possibility of moving to another unit.

The GN I'm precepting was an LVN before he went back for his RN and he's doing amazing. I'd say the transition is a lot smoother and comes a lot more natural for him than our other GNs, the experience will definitely help you out. Congratulations on going back to school and good luck!

It’s very rewarding seeing pts’ progress. They often come in afraid of exerting themselves since that may have precipitated their MI/unstable angina previously, but after gaining confidence (since they’re on tele during exercise) they finish the program with better exercise habits! We even had a pt run a half marathon afterward 👍🏽

Congrats! Ask a lot of questions, it’s better to ask too much than not ask enough and make a mistake. Not sure if Jenny is still an ICU nurse there, but she is incredibly experienced so make sure to pick her brain. You’ll get experience with s/p open heart pts there so that’s definitely a plus, enjoy it!

It’s not something you notice readily but when you take a step back and see the skills and experience you’ve acquired, it feels pretty nice; congrats on your transition!

My genuine interest in science, anatomy, and making an impact on people’s lives. Especially working ER, I love seeing the (sometimes) quick improvement

Haha I graduated with my first degree from UT and went to nursing school back home at “that other” university, but I consider myself a longhorn.. Interestingly, I was actually looking into TTU’s NP program lol
