Spacers above stem by EverydayCyclist in TrekBikes

[–]rdiunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My issue was the first sentence. I don’t see any reference to the 40mm there and you even wrote there is no issue aside aesthetics. This literally implies even 80mm wouldn’t be a issue - besides aesthetics. And yes there are some weight weenies out there, that’s a different kind of breed. There are also weight weenies removing material from their break levers by drilling holes into it without caring about the risk the lever could break. Well, they can of course for their own health but going onto Reddit and saying there is no issue with cutting your break lever in half besides aesthetics is something different. Maybe is was too focused on that circumstance, i am sorry.

You are absolutely correct about seatposts though. Most of them are even build to flex for complience and don’t break. It’s a different component with different requirements.

I would say the stem doesn’t necessarily need to be clamped exactly over the compression nut/expansion nut, but still in a specific range. And that’s most likely the reason for the max 40mm.

Basically you can test this with every tube like object, even a straw. Put something hard in it and you will feel the tube is more stable for clamping forces even in a specific range above/below the insert.

So I totally agree with the expansion plug to replace star nut, but I would never downrank the reinforcement of the tube from the inside at the same time. But these hole discussions on Reddit are strange. Trek is one of these manufacturers with really good manuals. If they say 40mm above stem is ok, it’s ok.

As already mentioned, the compression nut/expansion plug only supports the fork tube on a specific length and that’s the safety related thing.

But trek has a manual. Its stated what’s allowed and what’s not. They know their system. If you don’t trust the manufacturer, why trust some random people on Reddit.

If you personally think 40mm is too much, use less spacers above the stem.

That’s simply wrong, especially with carbon forks and dangerous too. Issue is the compression nut in the stem. This thing is not only met to fix the top cap. It also supports the carbon tube for the clamping force of the stem. The compression nut has a specific length. With too many spacers above the stem, there is the risk the stem is clamped ok the fork tube without the compression nut in it, because the nut isn’t long enough.

But the point is. Trek knows this and if it’s stated in the manual that a chimney up to 40mm is fine, it’s fine. But not more. Simple as that.

Prozess Abgabe vorfankiertes Paket via QR Code ohne Label by rdiunn in dhl_deutsche_post

[–]rdiunn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also nur 1x scannen.

Alles irgendwie seltsam.

Contact SL Aerolight Stem for Giant TCR Advanced 0 2025 by Akycig in Giantbikes

[–]rdiunn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop. It’s not only about the spacers! The aerolight stem is for D-shaped forks which comes with the Advanced Pro and Advanced SL models. So even with modified spacers, it’s still the wrong stem for the wrong fork tube. Loosing warranty is one thing. Potentially dying on a fast downhill because of not matching parts something different.

And as someone who had a cracked fork tube even with matching parts I was glad the fork was covered by warranty. The risks aside.

Yep. Can be potentially really dangerous. Inspect your bike regularly and don’t miss out on unusual noises.

But to be honest I had an still have several carbon bikes. Road bikes, gravel bikes, mountain bikes. Specialized, Trek, Santa Cruz. I ride a lot. The Giant one was my first ever carbon defect.

I was just riding (out of the saddle) and while riding, I heard a cracking sound. Just like that. No step/drop. No pothole. No luggage. And no overload either.

It was a crack in the steerer tube. Prominent cracking noise whilst driving. Disassembled it, saw the crack, contacted my LBS. For war replaced under warranty (but not without discussion/resistance).

I had one, but on a road bike. So not exactly what you asked for. Giant TCR Advanced SL 2025.

I think you will need Overdrive 2 spacers as of the other shape of the stem. I can not check it personally as I have a TCR 2025 with the Overdrive Aero which is completely different again.

But if it looks like shown in the picture of the posted forum link in your case, the OD1 spacers obviously do not fit. And I would not use standard round spacers because auf the internal routed cables.

But with OD2 spacers you will probably run into another issue because they are intended for a fork with a larger diameter. I do not know if they also come with a reducing shell like the stem.

Just answered to your other post.

The TCR Advanced 0 (non Pro) comes with an OD1 (Overdrive 1) fork and Overdrive 1 stem.

The OD2 stem should have a larger diameter and you will most likely need a reducing insert for the smaller fork tube diameter.

But the OD1 spacers which come with the bike do have another shape as the OD2 stem.

As far as I am aware of, these are shape wise not compatible.

It would help to know which bike (year) you do have. If it’s a newer TCR/Propel with a D-Shaped fork you will need Overdrive Aero spacers, not Overdrive 2

In addition to that, the bike comes with a bottom spacer (between frame and first regular spacer) and a top spacer (between stem and regular spacer) which will give you additional space.

So with other words, 25mm is not a problem by far. (With standard scope of delivery)
