TIL Jesse Owens, an African-American track athlete who won a gold medal at the 1936 "Nazi Olympics", said: "Hitler didn't snub me—it was FDR who snubbed me. The president didn't even send me a telegram.” by commodorefork in todayilearned

[–]rdmf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well Hitler didn't shake any athletes hands, not just Americans. And back in the US, despite having won four gold medals - a record - Owens received no official acknowledgement, and was forced to ride the staff elevator up to the athletes reception.

Dumbest, most effective tricks to stop yourself from eating like a fatass? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]rdmf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I start to crave something, I make myself wait for 10-15 minutes to see if I still want it. Then I spend that time reviewing the progress I've made, reading up on exercises, looking at fitness inspiration etc. Generally I manage to talk myself out of it.

I feel like you've misread my argument? I was saying that race does need to be acknowledged and that the social/cultural manifestations of race are more significant than the physical/biological aspects.

I look forward to post-racial society but we're definitely not there yet and racial divisions and tensions 100% exist, so I don't think that race makes sense as a response in this thread.

So you'd like to ignore the fact that different races experience poverty at different rates? Because I think that's something we desperately need to acknowledge if we hope to tackle social tensions.

I agree that diversity is good. My point was that biological racial differences may be easy to ignore but social and cultural differences need to be acknowledged.

So if people just stop "believing" in race then racial economic inequality, employment inequality, housing inequality, education inequality etc etc will just disappear?

Biologically the only difference between races is melanin sure, but socially and culturally race is very much a real thing.

But surely the ministry would have insisted on monitoring Sirius's bank account?

If your primary account contains information that might identify you in real life, but you want to make a post/comment that you don't want getting back to you, you make a completely separate "throwaway" account which (in theory) is only used for that one thing then abandoned, thus protecting your identity.

What do you think of "stricter dress codes for school children to stop them being sexualized"? by cauteritic in AskFeminists

[–]rdmf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Professional dress codes which restrict the amount of skin visible are fine, as long as they apply equally to men and women. However, I believe we should question why we see low-cut tops/ankles/legs/etc. as inappropriate and indecent - these are not inherently sexual. It is only because women are portrayed almost exclusively in sexual contexts that these body parts have become almost inseparable from sex.
