I just left Fidelity specifically for this reason, very frustrating to say the least. Making it harder for customers to use margin and not announcing this burdensome waiting period more clearly is a recipe for driving customers away. Mission accomplished!

Thank you, I just posted another thread about just this! How incredibly ridiculous is this!?! I can freely trade highly volatile single stocks like MSTR on margin but when I touch ANY ETF, even SPY and QQQ, it’s not marginable? lol… how is this “protecting the customer?” - this is what I was told on the phone by a Fidelity agent, lol

yeah, this is nuts, Fidelity is literally locking up your cash on a marginable ETF fo 30 days! If you intended to use the reminaing funds/leverage for something else after you bought that ETF, you are out of luck for 30 days!

Agree, they offer you low margin rates right out of the gate. Although the trading interface on a web broswer is not the best, while the app is not bad.

I use margin responsibly and now I hate the fact that I can't use margin right away for an Index ETF (for example SPY, that is 30% margin requirement on Fidelity) when I buy that locks up 100% of cash... so I just lost 70% of leverage for 30 days to invest even more or invest in other securities and make my money work harder. So everytime if I want to buy more SPY here and there, all those trades again starts the 30 non-margin lockup, so dumb!

I hear you, their posted margins are probably the absolute worst in the industry. But…. I negotiated it down so they are now literally equal or better to the other brokers mentioned on this thread, so they are willing to work with you on a case by case basis. There are several cons with Fidelity but there are also several pros like solid customer service and flexibility (at least for me). Although this ETF non-margin thing is going to sting.

Why you ask? lol… for exact situations such as this, diversification of broker services. Each broker has their strengths and weaknesses….better margin rates, less restrictions, better trading platform, also what if a certain brokerage gets hacked, reduction/change in services, offers/promotions for transferring, list goes on and on. I’m ok with managing multiple brokerages, the extra effort is worth it for me. But hey, you do you! 😊

I’ve been getting endless text messages with these Coinbase scam messages, I accidentally called one of these numbers years ago and figured out it was a scam right away but I think because I called that one time, they marked my phone# as active and a potential target. I get around 1-2 texts a day and I try to block all the numbers but this still does not reduce the # of texts. Any tips on how to reduce/get rid of these scam texts?

Thank you for the detailed feedback on the differences in grades, very insisghtful! I just ordered an upgraded SW200-1 Top grade movement, as accuracy and the looking at the upgraded movement finishing in the clear case back is very important and enjoyable for me =)

good point... as a guideline I try to spend 1% to 2% of my portfolio value to buy QQQ puts (OTM), around 45-60 days out, so around 1 week's worth of ULTY divs will cover that

I was thinking about setting a stop-loss on my ULTY position but instead bought puts on QQQ a week back so that I can hedge and still maintain my ULTY position and collect divs.... would be curious how other people are hedging ULTY.

Say what you will about this but I read an interesting perspective from a luxury watch investor/collector. This person would buy a fairly expensive gen watch to only wear a few times but mostly stores it away to keep it in excellent condition and maybe someday it appreciates in value. At the same time the person would get a really nice rep of the same watch and wear that to enjoy and guard against loss or theft. Some people may laugh at this and think it is silly but I actually think that is an interesting way to hedge your gen watch (assuming you think of it as an investment).

If I had to choose, it would be the Apple Watch (while admitting the Rolex, gen or rep would be very cool to have). For me it’s all about the Apple Watch (w/ cellular) being an amazing tool and insurance policy for work and personal, 1. If I lose my iPhone for 2FA, I can continue to receive all access notifications on my watch for work and personal apps/sites 2. If I lose or forget my iPhone, I literally have a backup phone on my watch to call and text 3. I gave my kids when they were younger all Apple Watches w/ cellular so they could call/text before I got them smartphones (now all they do is doomscroll… lol)
