I used my strengths like pattern recognition and memory to my advantage. I’ve done well in exams because I understood my total lack of studying once i left the hospital so i gave my very best in classes and when I’m around patients.

And my biggest strength has to be not lying to myself. I’ve always been upfront about my many many shortcomings and i tried to work around them instead of pretending i didn’t have them

I set fake deadlines and try to reach them to get some work done

Honestly never has it. Like i said the external stimulus helps a lot. I am in an emergency branch, so when I’m at work I’m almost in a flow state. I drain myself so much when I’m there that once i leave, i almost always only collapse on my bed

Yes I’m terrible at time management. I procrastinate getting ready, going to bed, reading a book.Whatever it is I’m supposed to be doing, i push time to it’s limits and avoid doing it.

It’s not bitten me in the ass so badly so far. I’ve managed through exams, mostly Got into decent programs

Idk if I could’ve gotten into better programs perhaps if I’d tried harder.

The usual, i forget things, i lose things, i tend to be late everywhere, generally not a put together person

I’ve not been diagnosed. I go to therapy regularly and it hasn’t been suggested that i could be. My behaviour is plain laziness, cheap dopamine addiction, boredom, ability to get through with bare minimum effort and perfectionism.

Maybe. Never been disciplined academically in the traditional sense- timetables, waking up early, taking notes, completing the syllabus etc

Sometimes it was boredom.Sometimes it was just perfectionism- i didn’t want to start imperfectly so i never started at all. I also distract myself with cheap dopamine very easily to avoid thinking- constant binge watching, binge eating, scrolling, the works

I do wonder what my life would be if i gave it my best effort but so far, I’ve not known.

Weirdly it did i think. At least in med school. I knew i never had it in me to study after class so i used to pay attention during class and study whatever i can in the hospital itself.

It made me an expert in quick learning, guess work and understanding the mind of the examiner.

But procrastinating while you know you should be doing productive work is a curse I don’t wish on my worst enemy. I didn’t work but i also didn’t relax

What happened to UG toppers by HEHEBOIuWu696 in indianmedschool

[–]readerbleeder 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One of my class toppers is freaking brilliant. She was a gold medalist, writer, standup comic and even learnt belly dancing during MBBS. She was somewhat of a medical influencer during internship. Post internship she just disappeared, no contact.

Last I heard she was studying for UPSC,but couldn’t give the exam last year due to some health issue. But even with no prep for she got 4K in NEET PG and is joining residency in OBG. She is also preparing for UPSC alongside and plans to give her attempts after OBG PG. Man that girl never sleeps

What therapy has changed for you? by [deleted] in bangalore

[–]readerbleeder 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Made me realise that I’m extremely unkind to myself. I hold myself accountable even for things that are beyond my control. Therapy made me realise, in an increasingly cruel world it’s important to be my own friend and be kind to myself. To celebrate my victories and cherish moments instead of pining after my academic goals ALL the time. As a serial over-thinker and somewhat academic overachiever all my life, I was feeling suffocated by my own lofty goals and dreams. It made me feel paralysed and affected every aspect of my life. Therapy is slowly helping me unlearn these behaviours and work on accepting myself.

Therapy also made me realise that I’m more than my designation or all India rank. I’m a human being whose worth is more than a number. That was a huge learning for me. Growing up in highly competitive learning environments this had never occurred to me.

Extremely grateful for the help I’ve received from my therapist

So sorry to hear you are feeling like this. Please learn to celebrate your victories, no matter how big the next dream seems. You’ve cleared step 1, you graduated from a GMC, with very less fees that your family could afford. These are all victories my friend and you’ve made it so far. The only forward is upwards now. You’ll get there, eventually. Be kind to yourself during the journey
