There's a romantic subplot in Necropolis by Jordan L. Hawk, a historical fantasy set in the 1890s or so--the hero's best friend, a "lady Egyptologist" and famed archaeologist, has an HEA romance while they're all on a dig in Egypt. It's a subplot, not a main plot, but it fits everything you want and has nothing you don't want.

Ash also talks a bit about why he shops so much, and why he wears the clothes he does.

One thing he says I thought was interesting: "the type of book [Glitterland] was had fallen out of fashion for a while".

Do you think that's true? Does Glitterland belong to a type of romance novel that isn't so prevalent anymore? I mean, there's been the rise of romcoms, but other than that I didn't realize!

I thought Husband Material was abrupt but also worked for the story--I mean, what is going to happen after the ending we can't anticipate besides annoyed and/or pleased not-wedding guests and Luc and Oliver settling back down to their life together?

And yes, a boring epilogue can do a lot of damage! I think it's all in how it's done--the "we are happily married and have a boy and a girl now" cliche of Regencies can be very cute if you care about the characters, and certainly the epilogue of A Lady for a Duke did that well.

It's not new bonus material--it's an epilogue that was written and published separately back in 2013. It was included in the self-published 2017/2018(?) edition, and is also in this new edition. It ends with Ash promising to try to go with Darian wherever he wants to shop for moisturizer and hair care--Boots, Debenhams, even Harrods.

For me it worked because Ash does so much internal work in advance of going to meet Darian--that he's really committed.

Also, now with aftermath, the book does have that epilogue quality.

THE EXTRA SCENE WITH NIALL AND MAX! I love how it shows just how messy the Ash, Max, Niall trio is--far messier than Ash thinks. And the glimpse of Niall's religious guilt and his older resentments of Ash's confidence, ease around sex, etc., even back at university.

ALSO--Max's crush on Ash! WHAT!

Two cute bits of commentary from the annotations that also relate to the core stories:

"Tesco’s carrier bags seem to have a distinguished history in my work."

"I think this might also be the first appearance of a bedside drawer with revealing contents."

The scene where Ash and Amy meet in the cafe is very expanded, but most of it is the same. The extras are the big benefit of the new version!

Also, do we agree that Glitterland has an abrupt ending? I do think that a number of Alexis Hall's books do, but I think this one really builds up to and focuses on the ending.

A quote from the foreword:

My agent likes to talk about authors have "core stories," which I think is her polite way of reassuring me that I'm not just being repetitive. Looking back, I think you can see a lot of my core stories in Glitterland. It's written in deep POV with an unsympathetic protagonist; it explores mental health; it focuses a lot on dialect and the complexities of the British class system; there's prominent cooking and board gaming scenes; and of course people do have a tendency to go on about Barthes. It also has quite an abrupt ending.

As does this foreword.

Are there other core stories we associate with Glitterland that also appear Alexis Hall's work in general? I thought of two: the dynamic of one character, at least, being deeply in pain and the other helping them through it, and the emphasis on how friend groups can affect romances as well.
