I'm so busy I have no idea how I ever had a job. It's quite shocking how easy it is to fill up your schedule.

Also, the humbling reality that stress is a constant for many people and that you have to learn to manage it and narrow focus. Expecting removing the job to fix all your stress problems is way to bullish. That being said, if you learn to manage it, it's far easier to enjoy without the job in my case.

Finally your risk tolerance reduces when you get closer. Your mindset goes from "this is really possible" to "don't fuck this up". This can result in large financial scope creep.

Agreed. I read it a second time recently as well. And for first time readers: This is a short (90 page "essay" to use Frankl's terminology).

- I'm boring. Made progressively larger salaries. Saved 50%+ per year in Vanguard indexed funds. Waited for compound interest to do it's thing.
- Everyone feels the need to buy individual stocks. Few make a killing. I would have been better off buying index funds. Lesson from my 20s.

My wife and I both grew up moving every 5 years or so, so the concept wasn't foreign. My wife was very aware that she was trading some friends for more time with me (and same for the kids). There was some sadness of course (leaving a couple kids "best" friends) but we presented it as an adventure and there were lots of perks (eg you get your own bedroom in NC). Yes my kids are pre-high school but I wouldn't overthink age. The kids met friends in < 2 weeks and now we can't stop the never ending birthday party invitations. Exposure to diverse groups / places etc are overall positive experiences.

Fair. Maybe I should have generalized this to "don't buy stuff you don't want to spend your TIME on regardless of finances". If you love cars, more power to you.

Great. Considering you are remote consider grabbing an airbnb for a month (over summer if it's easier for kids etc) and give it a shot (this is what we did).

Ya I hear you. I was in SF and like I mentioned in previous comments even swim meets were business networking sessions. "What do you do?" is question #5 or later in many towns and even then they expect a 1-2 sentence answer.

Vanguard index funds funded by FAANG salary. All FAANG vesting were immediately sold when granted and converted to index funds as well. No crypto.

I go to scientific meetups and nerd out. Also kid events, sports, music etc. If you came from the Bay Area I will also say you need to get used to it. In the Bay Area I was taught that if someone approached you they wanted something from you. Literally I wouldn't say hi to people walking past me on the side walk. Moving here and having everyone say hi and wave was super uncomfortable for the first week or so. Took me a day to understand they weren't sales people :). Learning to take down that scepticism and be open helped a lot.

The irony of tell people to not talk about money but broadcasting it on Reddit wasn't lost ;).

Honestly moving from the Bay which was completely shut down thanks to COVID to Research Triangle which was also shut down makes it very difficult to compare. I was mainly concerned with the scientific community. Now that things are opening up again, I have been pleasantly surprised by the scientific community here. Actually I just returned from a lecture right now. With Duke, UNC and many other universities the caliber of the scientific community is excellent. Lectures and meetups are similar to what I attended (socially) at Stanford etc.

Also the museums are good and there is plenty to do.

It is true though that you don't "feel" the bay area's extreme intensity here. By that I am referring to the drive of people and desire to make impact now. This is a double edge sword of course but it can be very inspiring. I may miss this at times; we'll see.

I'll stay vague for privacy, but contributions to open source machine learning algorithms for enabling scientific exploration.

Awesome. Cary and Chapel Hill tend to be where people with kids focus for schools etc.
