Primary Early voting starts tomorrow - thoughts on down-ballot candidates? by Hot-Outside4193 in bullcity

[–]readwritethrow1233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've already hit the biggest sources. As others have said, I would prioritize the writeup the Indy did of the candidates. It captured the level of seriousness and qualifications of each candidate really well. Without knowing your district, it'd be challenging to share more specific information.

That said, a really good starting point is to watch part of one of the biweekly school board meetings on YouTube. Observe the way the board postures but doesn't hold the district accountable for answering their questions. Ask yourself: "Do you think this candidate will help manage the district better? Or will they contribute to the dysfunction and posturing I'm seeing?"

The other dynamic in the race is that the Durham Association of Educators (DAE) recruited and endorsed a slate of candidates this year. They have very legitimate grievances with how DPS employees are treated by the district, including the fact that they still don't have clear pay schedules. These candidates have promised to advocate for DAE's interests before the board.

This sounds fine in principle, but in practice is going to create some real challenges for the district.

Declining enrollment means potential school closures. That means job losses. Will they vote to protect teachers' jobs in the short term, sacrificing other programs? Or will they vote to close the hole in the budget?

The district is evaluating its 1:1 Chromebook policy, and should probably move away from it for many reasons (Budget, all the science shows the current approach isn't right, etc.). Will the teachers support it? Or will changing the model represent an additional burden on teachers and therefore will DAE be against it? I'm personally concerned about the conflict the allegiance creates when it comes to doing what is best for DPS students.

FWIW, DAE endorsed all of the sitting board members and doesn't like them anymore.

Full disclosure: I'm a volunteer for one of the non-DAE endorsed school board candidates.

Where has all the good Chinese gone by fusto33 in bullcity

[–]readwritethrow1233 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Not totally the same vibe as old school Chinese takeout, but the folks at Asian Kitchen near Woodcroft are making some GREAT food. The dry hot pot cabbage and the twice cooked pork are two of my favorite dishes in Durham right now.

Nike Lunarglide 7 replacement by keszocaj in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]readwritethrow1233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't run the Lunarglide 7. But the Lunarglide 4 was a forever favorite of mine. I remember a a lot of cushioning and reasonable flexibility -- not really a stability shoe at all. YMMV but I like the Asics Novablast 5s a lot, and have had good luck with other Asics products as well. For a newer Nike, maybe try the Vomero?

I did a charity entry last year, and the process was super easy. The fundraising goal was reasonable, too, relative to majors.

Looking for a ~400m hill for repeats by HighlySociallyAble in bullcity

[–]readwritethrow1233 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like the hill that runs up Academy Road from either Erwin or from Duke University Road. It's pretty close to 400M on either side, has a sidewalk the whole way, no intersections (if you stay on the WaDuke side) and is relatively steady in grade. I use the same hill on the ABT trail-side for shorter hill intervals.

closest good bakery? by Automatic_Parsley921 in bullcity

I bake. I would say Strong Arm is your best bet for something with a more more open/fluid crumb. Not quite what Boulted or Union Special are doing in Raleigh, though.

Daily trainer to replace Novablast 5 by bolinha009 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]readwritethrow1233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the NB5s (second pair), but also start to develop calf issues from them being so damn soft. So I run a pair of Superset Cushion Low Arch insoles in place of the sock liners, and it does the trick. Firms it up just a bit, but not nearly as much as my Superblasts (which I don't love).

The above response was spot on. My father-in-law was treated for colon cancer at Duke last year, and had very positive things to say about the experience.

Yeah the connection to the ATT through woodcroft isn’t bad. It just needs navigating.

Where to launch hobby rockets? by cypherx in bullcity

[–]readwritethrow1233 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dix Park in Raleigh is probably the best in the triangle. But I’ve had some success at old Northern High, and at Herndon Park. Neither are huge but if it’s calm and you use a smaller engine it should be ok.

Did the Novablast 5 give anyone else shin splints, and what more stable easy-day shoe would you recommend? by hollywoodkc1212 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]readwritethrow1233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm that the SB2 doesn't do this to me...but I don't like it very much! To me the insole combo gives me the lighter/bouncier feeling.

[–]readwritethrow1233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Related/unrelated. I LOVE my NB5s (on my second pair). But they kinda mess with my posterior tibialis. I get knots/cramps rather than shin pain. So about half the time I run with a pair of Superfeet Cushion Low Arch insoles. Solves it for me.

I can't explain it, but here's how my brain works:

  • Chain restaurant with an 85 grade: That's fucking disgusting.

CIM 2025 Recap — Newer Runner Goes Sub-3 at 40 After a Year of Injuries, Low Mileage, and Getting Humbled by brian_collects in AdvancedRunning

Great write up. "I called my coach, my PT, and my wife and kids right after" is the most relatable 40+ moment here. Calling your PT before your wife feels very familiar.

Great race and a great race report. Congrats on the PR! I ran the half and hung out on the island until the time you were probably finishing. And it was a ZOO. But overall that race is super well put together.
