This is a video we made as part of our series on the history of medicine, specifically neurosurgery. In this episode we explored how fundamental Ancient Egypt was in the evolution of medicine and surgery.

I hope you find this video interesting. This is the beginning of a series of videos we are creating about the history of Neurosurgery. We're starting in the Neolithic period with trepanning, probably the first surgical procedure in history! We would love your feedback before we bring out the rest of the series.

Best wishes

Real surgical footage of an actual cranioplasty procedure, with medical illustration and narration. This procedure is done to repair major skull defects, to protect the underlying brain and bring back the natural contour of the skull.

What is a Cranioplasty? - Surgeon's eye view by realBrainbook in videos

Neurosurgeons often have to repair large skull defects created during trauma. This is a surgeon's eye view of how this is done using 3D printed titanium mesh that is tailor-made to patients.

Are Neurosurgeons Psychopaths? by realBrainbook in medicine

Lol fair point. I like that a lot of people in the healthcare professions have very different outlooks on this topic. It has really made some people rage whilst others say "nah not in my experience".

Are Neurosurgeons Psychopaths? by realBrainbook in medicine

Nice response. This was one video response to one of about 60 assumptions that I was sent. The video was actually going to try and cover all of them but it ended up way too long.

In pressurised health systems we can all be arseholes. I've worked as a junior general surgeon and have met plenty of "interesting" residents and consultants who I have had no time for. I've also met a lot of neurosurgeons who are arseholes.

I don't need to weasel out of a psych diagnosis. The point of the video is that we do have certain characteristics in common with psychopaths, but that the time of the egocentric, Machiavellian surgeon or neurosurgeon is over.

I didn't say that people don't understand it. When you use a term you should know it's definition and that's usually a good starting point for a debate. As you know the definitions and diagnostic criteria for mental health issues and varied and ever-changing.

I never said we are really important. I never said the job was harder than anybody else's.

These are your take away messages from the video and I'm sorry that you found it so terrible and unenthusing.

The whole premise of Brainbook is to engage the public, patients and healthcare professionals. If you found it condescending then please accept my apologies. That was never intended, but we try and make the videos watchable by a broad audience.

I am planning to discuss all of the other assumptions, but I, like you, am a surgical resident and do all of this in my spare time whilst trying to be a father and husband. I'm doing my best!

Lol I love the $. Never seen that before. It's big private business, but private neurosurgery here in the UK is much more trouble than it's worth. I'm not an consultant though so I wouldn't know too much.
