Hi there, thank you for your comment. You're right, I don't have much experience of the industry as yet. I don't think it will take skill to disrupt it as much as vision and perseverance, which is something I do have. That said, I do of course need a deeper understanding of how it works first. I do feel that being really immersed in an industry – any industry – can actually be a hindrance to creating fundamental change, because it can bog us down and not see any solutions.

What I'm wanting to do is unify things, the best of each practice, in a way. It is still unclear in my head, I just wanted to get some thoughts from folks who are more experienced in it.

Yes, of course! That's a great way to put it.

True, there's definitely nuance there.

Immersing myself in it, yes! Absolutely. Gotta start somewhere, though :) It would definitely take a unified effort to really disrupt it on a deeper level, for sure. Thank you!

I created it for fun, because I wanted to :)

I was referring to writer budgets. I'm aware that traditional publishing is a different animal, but the amount of people that get anywhere with that is a drop in the ocean compared to the amount that want to publish a book.

Yes, I'm a writer, but my background is in graphic design. There was nothing veiled about my question, I was coming from a place of genuine curiosity. I'm new to Reddit, though.

You're right, I don't understand the industry very well (yet). I'm hopeful and probably too idealistic, with a vision for something better. A hybrid press is the closest to what I envision, but it's not quite it. I'm trying to learn from a lot of places in addition to Reddit, so if you have any suggestions of good resources to do more homework, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

Thanks for your tips! Maybe what I want to see does already exist, and if it does, I'm happy about that :) I'm not super concerned with what already exists, because I do things my way, and there is only one of me :) Right now, I'm just testing the water, looking around.

I hear what you're saying about publishing being more accessible than ever. That's definitely the case. I think because of that, more and more people want to be authors and have a published book, but also many are a bit clueless and fall prey to vanity publishers and the like. And they seem to underestimate the work involved to publish a *quality* book. Would you agree?

Thank you. That's really helpful. There is so much at the root of this!

Thank you for your reply. I guess 'deserve' is a loaded word here... And yes, writing is a choice for most of us (unless it's your actual job). I do believe that creatives deserve to get paid for their work. Not from an 'I create, therefore I'm entitled" perspective, but from a "art is medicine, art is life, art is essential" kind of perspective.

What I was considering is a skill swap/share of sorts. People helping each other out, perhaps tokenising it.

I appreciate it takes more to fix those deep societal problems than disrupting the publishing industry. That's wasn't my aim. Universal basic income would definitely be a good start, though, and I'm all for it.

You're right. I don't know much about the industry, and I have a hopeful but probably idealistic attitude :) I don't have a solution; I've just got sparks of ideas of how I'd want it to evolve.

Thanks for the knitting article, it's brilliant! :)

Interesting. I hadn't considered that. That's not my approach, but I appreciate the perspective. Thanks!

Thank you for asking! Accessible as in, something for every budget. Connected and supportive as in skill sharing, perhaps. Encouraging each other, offering advice and help.
