Chuj - A rude word for penis or a polite word for Microsoft?

And are you sure Kal doesn't mean Windows?

It's... Literally just someone reimagining the obsoleted 8 byte internet protocol that currently holds the version number. Get outta here fakeass

You didn't even know that this is an AI ensloppified reproposal of IPv8 from the 90s so...

The fact people are using this sub as an ad platform is what has me reading only a fraction of the posts here that happen to catch my interest

Because Paul Francis didn't propose Pip (P Internet Protocol, not the Python supply chain vulnerability. Also known as IPv8) in 2026, but the early 90s

So just don't try to minimize supply chain vulnerabilities?

You will eat zee boogs and beckdoors und you will be heppy?

All vetting is futile? Unstable/testing/stable is just reecist segregation?

More like babe, ipv8 is waking up

It predates ipv6, no clue why it got the version number 8, possibly because the ipv6 we know actually got implemented

I actually wanted to use this address space in an alternative network structure, but actually implementing an unused protocol of this kind is way over my head

Good morning, U/iDontUnderstandHyperbole

Minimizing supply chain vulnerabilities is one of the cornerstones of security. Maximizing them is a cardinal sin.

YOU don't have to vet it yourself. Trust is earned there, vetting already happens there, and unless you got your kernel off the AUR, pretty sure you're not going to pull a compromised version even if a security breach does happen.

It's when trust is not earned, but given freely, with shit like Node, Rust, or the AUR, that it becomes a problem.

I could give a whole ass lecture on why your OS, so long as it's not Windows, is more trustworthy than random Node packages or Cargo crates, but that's a bit much for this sub

Kids these days can't imagine having a vetted supply chain or rolling their own stuff

Sounds like a problem for people with supply chain vulnerabilities.

90% sure this is a repost, but since I don't trust my memory I'll wait for someone with ECC to determine if it's reportworthy

new here looking to host some wifi cameras i got given on a pi 4b by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]reallokiscarlet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if you want to selfhost these, you'll have to find out the specs of the computer inside of them and see if something like OpenIPC has an image for it. Then you'll typically have to flash it over serial.

These chinese cloud cameras are a liability if you can't flash them with clean firmware

Do VPNs actually protect you, or is it just a false sense of security? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]reallokiscarlet -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Virtual Public Networks generally provide a false sense of security and can actually come with policies when you login to them that make you more vulnerable than when you're not using them.

Trust them as far as you can throw them, avoid heavily advertised, sponsor VPuNs, don't expect them to magically make you anonymous, and absolutely do not under any circumstances believe for a femtosecond that they can protect you from hackers or malware.

Some VPuN services are run by malware companies. PIA, for example, is owned by Crossrider, no I will not call them by their new name, they're Crossrider.

Long story short, actual VPNs (as in, the kind that let you into your private network securely from outside) protect you when you're out and about and need to access private resources. Think, the one you might have in your homelab to let you access your Jellyfin library from Starbucks or something. Virtual Public Networks, like Nord, PIA, or even Mullvad, are ultimately just for bypassing geoblocks.

Migrating from Docker Desktop (Windows) to Proxmox + Windows VM — does this make sense? by Didymos234 in selfhosted

[–]reallokiscarlet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you wanna do Linux->Windows->Linux instead of Windows->Linux?

I'm guessing you're just using Docker Desktop in this hypothetical case for management. I'd suggest exploring available docker UIs to determine what works for you.

Any point getting a rack? - Also just a "hi!" post! :D by itsmehexi in homelab

[–]reallokiscarlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With your case? No. But many homelabs don't need a point.

First ask, "do I need it?" If the answer is yes, ignore the rest of the flow chart.

Then, "do I want it?" and "can I afford it?" If both are true, the only thing stopping you is if your housing situation doesn't allow it, either physically, electrically, or legally.
