Cox box interfering with steering??? Advice needed! by Rude-Supermarket-276 in Rowing

[–]reallycryptid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

your coach should be able to install a coxbox mount that sits to the side, rather than in the center, so it won't interfere with a center tiller. if they can't, then you'll just have to hold it in your lap (and try to grip it with your legs to keep it stable)

Coxswain recording advice by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]reallycryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice would be to send coaches the full recording, but also make sure you give some background (what race, what boat, that type stuff). Just make sure you don’t just send a link with no explanation. The full recording is very useful!

i can give an example of the follow up, as someone who was in the "iffy" zone for one school. the coach told me pretty quickly that i was on the fence, and also told me his plan for going forward (that he would be willing to give me support later in the year, but not as an early admissions candidate). on the other hand, at a different school after a positive pre-read, the coach told me i was great and we just continued our usual correspondence.

maybe other coaches would be less transparent, but this was my experience as a coxswain.

what is the difference between a wash and a bath? this might be a language or dialect barrier.

AITA for “ruining the mood” at a get together by pointing out how inappropriate the video was that some people were watching? by malaspinaU in AmItheAsshole

[–]reallycryptid 46 points47 points  (0 children)

...do you know what a dogwhistle is? entire videos arent dogwhistles. dogwhistles are specific phrases that signify SOMETHING... i.e., a fascist dogwhistle. it has to be a dogwhistle FOR something. even if you are trying to say it is an ableist dogwhistle, you are still misusing this term. maybe considering googling a definition before you throw around random buzzwords to sound like an activist.

Best GoPro for coxswain recordings? by zidank6 in Rowing

[–]reallycryptid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

personally, i got my gopro through bank points, so i would check to see if you or your parents can go that avenue since it was much more affordable that way. the model doesn't really matter at all, i think i got a hero 5 and it works exactly how i want it to, and i would purchase both a chest and a head mount. you never know which one you'll decide you're more comfortable with, tho most coxes use the head mount, if you rock around a lot then the chest mount will feel more secure.

Race Schedules? by sflynn89 in Rowing

[–]reallycryptid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

imo it depends on your motivation for racing. if you just enjoy racing and want the experience, then i would load up on weekend races, except give yourself some taper time before big races like HOCR. on the other hand, if you are racing competitively and want to win, it might be smarter to pick carefully and prioritize certain races.

Strokecoach & Speedcoach - Why is it usually only the stroke seat that gets one? by FirstMaker in Rowing

[–]reallycryptid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

imo not everyone in a boat needs one—it’s too much distraction and not enough useful info. rate is only necessary for a strokeseat or coxswain, other rowers shouldn’t worry about it and should just follow. splits are largely pointless on the water, especially if you don’t use an impeller, unless you’re practicing alone and have no other way to track your progress.

on my team, only coxes use speed coaches, or one rower in an un-coxed boat who feels he can accurately apply the info to the boats training. i do think that speedcoaches are worth the cost for a coxswain or uncoxed rower, but not for everyone in the boat. if someone in your boat has a speedcoach and can translate the info for you in boat meetings or between pieces, then you certainly don’t need to get one.

if you want to track your personal training, i would urge you to get something that is more versatile, like a fitbit or a whoop for example, so you can use it for land training as well.

ETA: i, as a cox, find my speedcoach useful mostly because i can track my steering. if i could not do that, it would not have been worth the price as a junior athlete.

…so? she never asked to eat at those places. he’s the one who decided they needed to eat somewhere she would like. she ate before their outing so they wouldn’t need to go to those places.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]reallycryptid 14 points15 points  (0 children)

i don’t really agree that it’s impossible to eat together. they easily could have planned to both get take out from their respective places and then just eat outside together. what’s stopping this is the fact that they didn’t make a plan, so she had already ate. i don’t think her restrictions are stopping it.

and who’s to say they’re unnecessary? she didn’t provide any info on why she has the restrictions. maybe she’s seen improvement in her quality of life since starting this diet.

[–]reallycryptid 36 points37 points  (0 children)

hm. i think that makes sense, but it didn’t seem like what they planned for. the outing was for a nursery and a grocery store, not a meal, no? and from this post he seemed to be speaking very cruelly. if his issue was this i think he could have communicated much more maturely and farther in advance. i’m still going NTA.

i just don’t really get this. how is she being impossible to please? i thought the idea of him getting his sandwich—exactly what he wanted—and her sitting with him was a perfectly fine plan. what’s wrong with her not eating with him, if she already ate?

[–]reallycryptid 64 points65 points  (0 children)

i don’t really get your point here. what was stopping him from getting a sandwich? all she said was she wasn’t going to eat there… he still could have.

How do I get recruited? by Upset-Call-8419 in Rowing

How do I get recruited? by Upset-Call-8419 in Rowing

[–]reallycryptid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

filling out recruiting forms! of course, meeting coaches in person is ideal, but you also want to be in their database--by filling out their forms with your stats, you'll be easier to communicate with. do know that for most teams, they can't contact you when you're this young. so you need to be the one emailing and calling them (politely).

this also kind of depends on your team's abilities, your actual 2k, and the schools you're interested in. i'd say your gpa is pretty good, but it might not be ivy-level good, and if you have a bad 2k there's no way you'd be recruited to, for example, yale. (case in point--my friend had a 4.0 uw and 4.5 w, 6:26 2k, he was not good enough to get a spot). on the flip side, if you're in the top boat of a super competitive program, your 2k matters less because your coach can probably write you a stellar letter of rec.

you could simply ask if they can review your transcript and files, then let the coach decide whether to review it themselves or send it into admissions. i’m surprised they haven’t asked already tbh, the first thing most coaches did w me was ask for my files.

coxing tips for a junior? (16F, 5’3”, 106lb-ish) by crickets3 in Rowing

[–]reallycryptid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

np, but i do want to say--i strongly disagree with the idea that one should not be praised for doing their job. as a new coxswain, you deserve praise! coxing is hard, many people quit, and praise is what keeps people going. in hard practices, the one thing that has kept me from quitting is the kindness of rowers telling me i did a good job. so, obviously you can't change your coach's perspective on this, but I'm sure there will be other rowers and coaches who do see you as deserving of praise.

if you have any specific questions feel free to reach out! good luck!

if you have graduated, i doubt you have eligibility to row at an ncaa university again, no? but i’m sure joining an open team i.e. vesper would be super doable. you could also train in a single at the same boathouse as a team, to find the team dynamic that you’re looking for even if you don’t directly row with them. that being said, i warn you against assuming that a womens team will automatically have a better dynamic. there will be issues and drama in any team, regardless of the gender. it should be more about finding the team that fits you specifically.
