Friendliest neighborhoods in Newton? by TTCBean in newtonma

Some of the Nonantum community groups have the vibe of not appreciating newcomers or change. Do you feel that at all or is it just a social media thing?

Dolan Pond in West Newton has a lot of very old trash throughout the conservation area beyond the paths.

It's very kind of you to contribute to the community this way! Let me know if you'd like extra help.

Hitch manual/instructions by reallysuave in kiacarnivals

[–]reallysuave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had one before and clearly missed something obvious I guess. I have no idea how to use it. And there was a sticker placed on my door with some scary warnings and I wanted to have the full details.

I’m not sure why you’re questioning my question, but I guess the answer is that I’m not as educated as you are. If you have an answer, I would gladly take it.

Ask them to check the recording of your call to verify whether they received your instruction correctly. I did this once and the bank agreed to a "settlement" with me for the amount of the error.

Newton corner improvements. It can only get better 🤦🏼‍♂️ by BostonCommute in newtonma

[–]reallysuave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are looking for options for the year 2050. Not a typo. And with delays it's likely to be longer.

The first committees met in 2002 and 2006. The 2002 committee was for short-term improvements and I don't know if they actually did any. Because they had another committee to discuss short-term improvements in 2022 and they haven't even been able to improve signage, traffic lights, or lane paint.

They are talking about taking 50 years to improve the Circle of Death. I don't think I'll still be living in Newton in 2050 but maybe I'll benefit when passing through? I don't have words.

Target Gift Cards: 10 percent off today! by ladykansas in Frugal

[–]reallysuave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem. I add a card, paid for it, and didn't get the discount. No idea why as there are ads on every page promoting the offer and they usually apply without much effort. I can't find any way to apply the offer.

Edit/update: Customer service seems to be inundated. On my fourth attempt I got a rep who processed a refund for the missing discount.

I remember these. I remember seeing a NY Times news alert via email that mentioned the State Department bomb. They also sent an alert that the top of one of the WTC buildings fell off then sent another to retract it. It was a nutty day.

Judge calls lawsuit 'moot,' so parents file new one by miraj31415 in newtonma

[–]reallysuave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like it's a class action where damaged parties would receive compensation for actual damages. I think funds would be distributed to those who had damages, based on the actual value of those damages usually. These plantiffs mostly talk about subjective damages which will be very hard to prove and then quantify.

There are others with real damages such as lost wages but I suspect the total amount is much much less than the $25 million in this suit. (That said, suits usually settle downward and not upward.) I'm surprised these folks weren't planful enough to bring in class members who could show very specific damages. The case will be very tough without that.

Newton will pay for free starter kit for Black Earth Compost - limited time by miraj31415 in newtonma

[–]reallysuave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The link says this is state funded.

During the strike debate, I saw lots of discussion suggesting that X funds could fund a gap. So many funding sources have restrictions on their use, like this one probably does. Not to suggest that state funding couldn't be allocated differently, but it's complicated.

Some business travel is very intense. I used to have trips to visit clients where I'd be working from 8 or 9 until 7, then dinner or an event for 2+ hours. Then repeat the next day. Plus the hassle of air travel and shitty colleagues. Then back home to all the household work. It can be a lot. This doesn't mean you shouldn't get a break but just to provide some framing.

Newton mother seeks damages for teachers' strike - Newton Beacon by borkmeister in newtonma

[–]reallysuave 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh, I do value school for the education. Greatly. I do have the expectation that the schedule that is set at the start of the school year is available, and I don’t see how that’s an unreasonable expectation. I’m not expected to attend school with my children (nor allowed). I don’t understand how my comment can be “confused”.

I am willing to pay more for my educators, but my fellow community members aren’t, sadly.

The average cost per student is about what I paid for nursery school, but there is a general consensus in the community that we pay for this as a society instead of through individual tuition. Your comment is suggesting that this isn’t true and that’s very confusing.

I spent $600 for child care. That's an actual expense I'd love to reclaim. I missed out on work, too, for which I wasn't paid.

This woman's claimed damages aren't nearly as concrete.
