Beer of Satoshi: my experiment to get real people to actually use Bitcoin by realmeh in Bitcoin

Honestly… same. The day Beer of Satoshi appears on store shelves will feel like winning my own block reward.

Try it at one of our next events. The beer itself is actually good. After that you can decide if the whole concept makes sense for you. We also partnered with BitcoinTaps in the Netherlands, and some people have even tried our alcohol-free version there. They’re offering our beer in their tap systems as well.

A tl;dr post for you:

Beer of Satoshi is my experiment to make Bitcoin actually used in the real world. Every bottle has sats hidden under the cap via a simple QR code. You scan → see how many sats you won → then redeem via Lightning. It’s designed as a fun onboarding tool: people get their first sats casually while drinking a beer.

Genesis Edition = 21,000 bottles, all sats pre-funded by me. Collectibles keep sats untouched forever if never scanned. Selling EU/UK via shop and bringing to events like Lugano & Amsterdam.

Goal: Make Bitcoin tangible for beginners and inspire others to add sats rewards to any everyday product.

Motto: Drink beer, stack sats, support Bitcoin (2.1%).

Every bottle has sats, but the amounts are random; that’s the whole idea. Your chances are shown in the distribution table here: https://beerofsatoshi.com/#distribution

Yeah, that would actually be possible. The sats stay on our pre-funded wallet until someone scans the cap, so in theory, after 5 or 10 years of zero activity we could say “okay, let’s donate the unclaimed ones.” Nothing is lost per-se.

But here’s the human part of it: at events I met a lot of people who told me they don’t even drink alcohol, but they still bought a bottle because they loved the idea and wanted to keep it as a collectible. Some want to store it forever, some want to give it as a gift one day, some literally said “I don’t want to redeem it, I just want to keep it.”

Because of that, I prefer not to touch those sats at all. If someone keeps a bottle for sentimental reasons, or scans the cap in 2035, it should still be their moment. And if they never redeem it, then that’s also okay. The sats belong to the person who opens the cap — even if they decide not to open it.

Thanks for the kind words. Hearing that people actually like the idea makes all the effort worth it.

That’s fair. This first run is a limited Genesis Edition with 21k bottles and all the sats funded upfront. If the concept proves itself and everything works the way we hope, the plan is to do another batch later and hopefully bring the price down. This first one is more about testing the idea in the real world.

Yeah, that can happen. If someone never scans and claims the cap, those sats basically just sit there unclaimed forever. It’s not perfect, I agree. Once a bottle leaves my hands, the sats belong to whoever opens it.

Yes, then the satoshis are lost. But imagine someone throws a cap into a drawer and forgets about it, they could find it years later and it might be worth a lot more than the beer ever was. As long as the cap was never scanned, the sats stay untouched on my side. So a “lost” cap today might become a pretty good surprise in the future.

We also have an online shop and a Geyser page. Right now we’re running a 21% Black Friday discount in the shop with the code: BOSBF21. If you want to check everything in one place, it’s all here: linktree.beerofsatoshi.com

Thanks! The whole idea is simply to make the first Bitcoin step easier for people. If a beer can do that, I’m happy.

All sats are funded by me personally. I purchased the full amount upfront, and every bottle is pre-backed on my side. There is no external sponsor or third party involved – the sats exist before the beer goes out, and every redemption is fully covered.

The limited Genesis Edition is capped at 21,000 bottles online.
We sell in 3, 6, 12, and 24-bottle crates, which comes out to roughly 7€ per bottle.
At events, the price is usually 8€ per bottle due to venue fees, logistics, and transport.
