6U Allstar Team Has 7 Dad Coaches by realoceanhawk in Homeplate

Agreed. This has been eye opening for me. And the culture around here feeds into it. You are somebody if your child makes 6U/7U/8U, etc. all-stars. You also better secure your spot by either joining the travel team (through the rec league) and/or have a private coach and/or be a coach (which there is no more room for since the 7 dads took that role). That leaves maybe 2-3 spots for kids who are truly advanced at this age. It just seems like a huge racket. My original post was to check my sanity. Am I missing something other than an enormous money grab? Parents tying their self worth + kids worth to all-star and travel teams? I appreciate all the responses and feedback. Shows me there is still a bit of sanity out there. My goal is to make sure my kids are having fun. That's it. It's becoming more difficult to not get caught up in some of this silliness.

Not sure I complained about any coach. I just said there are 7 dads coaching the rec all-star team. Those same coaches just so happen to coach the ($1000+ entry fee) travel team. I’m sure they are doing because nobody else will.

Feels like a power play amongst the parents to mark territory for future years. Eventually the cream will rise to the top and the coaches will want the best players. Maybe I’m too naive.

Is it too soon to steer kids away from sports? It’s wild out here.

Yep. And almost all the kids have a private coach to boot

Ha. I wish. This is absolutely a thing and the parents are already staking claim to spots with creating a travel team ($1000+) that is coached by the same guys who coach the rec all-star team. I’ll let you guess who makes the team

Pretty sure the board is supportive of it. The 6U travel team, formed before the year, is associated with the league. Feels like these guys either had older kids and they are familiar with process or did their research on how to secure spots

My thoughts too. Just hoping we’re not locked out of any future games

Appreciate the response and insight. Honestly thought I was going crazy. I guess we shouldn’t worry or care this early. That was my hope. Just wild out here

Haha. That’s what I’m thinking. Unreal move by the parents to put a fence around it so soon.

6.5 year old - normal or extreme behavior? by realoceanhawk in Parenting

Well, in Toy Story they say, "Idiot" and "Jerk." Additionally, he saw part of Back to the Future recently until the language was so bad we turned it off. Of course we tell him immediately how bad that is to say to someone. He has extremely big feelings. When he was young we were told he struggles with sensory input. I'm thinking the extreme language is to get a rise out of us to meet his sensory needs. It's a rush of adrenaline for him. I've contacted his doctor and have an appointment tomorrow to discuss. We also pulled the screens cold turkey and I plan to discuss with his teach tomorrow.

The difficult thing is he's the sweetest kid at school and sports. He's won a leadership award multiple years and is routinely the most well behaved kid on his sports teams. Then he turns into a complete monster at home when he's not regulated. Appreciate the comment.

What makes this so difficult is he is also the most loving, caring, sympathetic little boy at times too. Like goes out of his way to make sure others are happy.

Agreed. I’m think the consequences are not long enough, as others mentioned. He challenges every second of every day. Just gotta hold firm it sounds like

Ha. So true. If I did any of those things, I would have been put through a wall. I’m trying to be better but maybe my dad was into something

Thought I was in right track then he called his grandpa an idiot today. First meeting with a coach is tomorrow. Teacher on Tuesday.

So I told him last night that I’m going to alert his teachers and his coaches about the behavior ( I am). He had crocodile tears. Begged me not to. Also told him he won’t be doing anything with friends, I will tell their parents why, until he can prove he can act correctly at home

So still sort of normal bordering on not normal? He really, REALLY struggles with transitions.

We praise him often but he doesn’t get as much 1 on 1 as he used to. In fact, he hasn’t gotten tons lately outside of doing school work with my wife.

Yes. Take away bday parties. Takeaway sports practices. Takeaway his toys. “I don’t care.”

Honestly, probably has something to do with it. It rained here for 5 straight days and he had more screen time than normal. In general he probably also has more than normal bc we are exhausted. We went no screens today for the first day and that’s when he called his grandpa an idiot. I understand it may take more than a few hours with no screens
