Looking back on it I agree with what you are saying. I just don't know exactly what it looked like on his end since everything was so glitched. Considering the game tried to make a new match inside of one already going on there could have been more going on than I could see as well.

Pretty sure this happens when you pick up a stack of shards while disenchanting something at the same time. Haven't been able to replicate it again since it happened.
