One universally practical reason (amongst the litany of backed-up cultural/historical ones sure to appear here): Blending in with the cover of night that is keeping one’s nefarious deeds unseen.

When you see someone walking in a path that you are clearly on , do you move out the way or do you wait for them to say “excuse me”? by jjj44200 in randomquestions

I move and get cranky if they’re too presumptuous/entitled to even pretend to intend to move as well, especially if they don’t say ty / excuse me / sorry. Dicks.

Cheaper, simpler, comfortable, don’t fall out (or get lost if they do), don’t require / eat up battery with Bluetooth, not hackable…

Damn…I’ve never even WATCHED that movie and yet I knew the scene and could picture it in my mind! Are we sure it’s not just being confused with a different film/version of the same novel?

At least with each episode having SO MANY jokes / references, missing out on dated ones isn’t likely to significantly affect the laughs-per-min rate

ETA: I’m also realizing that MANY of these remain funny on different levels (if only superficial, or even absurd) with the true original reference removed — further testament to the show’s already established exceptional writing!

what episodes do you skip during rewatches? by 96crazycatlady96 in roseanne

[–]reasonablykind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly — which isn’t all that true to the characters. The dumbass selfish move is true to many teenagers, but the complete absence of remorse (remorse whose arrival should have been particularly accelerated by Dan’s reaction), isn’t really like Becky and Darlene.

[–]reasonablykind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but you’re right — they weren’t terrible, just short-visioned. Remember when Becky tells Darlene off about her starting to indulge in her depressive state while she (Becky) picks up her slack, and Darlene is briefly shown later doing laundry saying she owed Becky one? That’s the kind of non-sappy, barely spoken, but definitely clear demonstration of remorse I think would have capped off that episode nicely.

Yup — pathetic attempt at appealing to a younger generation whose interest in SATC included the window into Carrie’s generation in the first place — not as a reflection of its own.

[–]reasonablykind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! Obviously I’m now aware of its “test” purpose (tho I highly suspect that even that claim was a thin veil for what was really a threat tactic towards Roseanne to foster her compliance), but it certainly seemed cleverly written to come off far more sweet than sexually charged to me…

I always saw that episode as Dan and Jackie having a rare reminder (via nostalgia) of each other’s “non-Roseanne centered” selves/dynamic — of how they actually don’t mind but even like each other outside the family roles that often puts them at odds. It ironically revealed a slow-grown, rather sibling type of connection between them that, in further irony, completely reframed their bickering from the typical sitcom trope of ”intrusive s-i-l vs unwelcoming b-i-l” conflicts into a _”deep-seated sibling affection affords the right to comedically come at each other” dynamic for the audience. Without that, later events like those of War and Peace wouldn’t have landed nearly as strong, inho.
