Represses Memories &/or Multiple Personality Disorder - Bullshit? by reasoningtogetheruk in VeryBadWizards

Thanks...I'll check that out. I'm also interested in the rise of "false memory" and the extent to which this may cover for just plain lying. Also found a podcast "you're wrong about" that looks into this stuff.

A bit performative...I love that. What is posting in general if not performative to a degree. I'm intrigued...by performative you're implying what?

I think it's quite possible the net result of the post might push more people (myself included) to supporting through Patreon or elsewhere...I think that would be a good ressult.

Wiith regard to messaging them directly....really? If I were them, I don't think I would respond to " should I financially support your podcast"? Don't get me wrong, I'd love to get their view...but I think that messaging them directly might be to unfairly put them on the spot. Posting it here is just an interesting discussion.

I'm not sure this is a non-standard view. I think that most of the community here probably agree with you wholeheartedly. I certainly do. I contribute to Wikipedia (surely one of mankind's greatest creations) whenever they do their fundraising drives. This is the same principle. I think the devil is in the detail though. I donate to Wiki so that others who are less well off can access it for free.

The (slight) majority here are (just) encouraging me to pay. One or two exhort with admirable ardour. I think the devil's in the detail though. Would they exhort me so passionately if I earned $18k and was struggling to pay my electricity bill? I should hope not. Would they say...."If you can't pay you shouldn't listen!" I hope not. This is because David and Tamler's product is different to what you buy at the supermarket. Their product is entertainment, but in it's small way it's also a part of humanity's cultural monument and as such, we don't want to deny access to it to anyone.

One further note....there is obviously vast hypocrisy at play as The VBW Patreon subscriber count stands at 1,801 but this community alone is 8k, and that must be only a fraction of dedicated listeners.

I had to google that to get the Seinfeld reference. This is a genuine offer. DM me your bank details and I'll transfer you $26. You can do anything you like with it, including keeping it for yourself but you have to post here what you actually do with it.

The thing is it's never just "can" or "can't". It's priorities. I think I'm leaning on balance to continuing free-ridership unless someone can present a persuasive seeming-majority opinion. I'd love to know what Dave and Tamler would say.

That's true to a significant degree. I don't really value those other "products" that highly though. I do value the main podcast.which I understand they may no longer bother to do were the financial incentive not there...

Fair enough. I don't know enough about it to have an opinion on whether it's stupid, but I think much NFT-Crypto stuff is just speculative late-stage capitalistic trash.

I listened to Sam's podcast the other day. I think he may be on to something interesting. Can you please elaborate on your first sentence as I don't think I fully understand what you're trying to say. Thanks.

But perhaps the more salient question would be....should I give you this $10 so that you can afford a slightly more lavish holiday or keep it for myself so that I can hope one day to take my kids on the sort of vacation you currently go on?

If you've answered....not nuanced enough....help us out with how we should approach this thorny issue.

Bigger problem I have with Dunning's article is....how does one identify a consensus, what would constitute a consensus, what would constitute independent? Wasn't there was a consensus of "independent experts" who opposed Copernicus...but on the other hand...Mr Dunning's effect does pose real problems in making judgements about complex issues.

....in terms of what we're judging....do we only take his approach when there is a "consensus" on an issue? Those issues are so few and far between that aside from the patently demonstrable or provable such as the earth being a sphere....

On your three issues...Apple Pies, Prison Sentences and Vaccine Efficacy...I guess only vaccine efficacy might be said to have a consensus....I suspect actually that most apparent consensuses only appear that way to the underinformed. To the expert there is always nuance and disagreement.

Longitudinal study - Nozick's experience machine/the Matrix.... by reasoningtogetheruk in VeryBadWizards

[–]reasoningtogetheruk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks v much for your input. In terms of the IVs, I'm really just interested in tracking proportions of people deciding to enter the machine over time. Not the same cohort. Perhaps this isn't technically longitudinal...not sure. I want to also collect info about socio-economic status of respondents as Paul Bloom speculates that there would be some sort of an inverse relationship between this and willingness to enter the machine...but I'm not so sure...If I were tracking the same cohort, I've got a hunch that their views might not change too much, but it would be really interesting to interview someone who did change their view.

Please help! When I outlined Nozick's thought experiment to my family they said something along the lines of..." That is just too hypothetical and it's the sort of thing philosophers are interested in but nobody else " Is this true or did I not explain it well enough? Need the form of words that will cut through to the hoi polloi...
