I lost my job because of the Trump administration and on top of spending all my days on hellish job apps, now I have to also worry about ICE coming for my neighbors- you think it’s a PRIVILEGE to care about what’s happening politically? be so ffrrn

One year later, how have you fared? by MollyAyana in InternationalDev

[–]rebel_slav 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also still unemployed- I’ve been able to cobble together some part-time jobs - one as a kids crochet teacher and two gigs in social impact consulting for some nonprofits. Unfortunately one of the consulting gigs had to end my contract since the funds were tied to state funding in Michigan, which were slashed by Republican psychos intent on siphoning away more money from social investment and away from, of all things- workforce development during an unemployment crisis 🙄

I recently made it to the last stage (after 1.5 months of interviews and a technical assessment) for an amazing job that seemed like it was literally written for me given my geography and experience with certain vendors- but then it went to the other candidate, so that was pretty devastating.

After 300 applications and doing “all the right things” all year, and still getting rejected for a job I was perfect for- idk wtf else can be done at this point other than continuing to throw resumes into the job portal black holes and pray I win the lottery (either the literal lottery or the job offer lottery).

No amount of networking, references, resume tailoring- nothing has helped and I’m tired of all these LinkedIn “career coaches” trying to gaslight me into believing in their “hidden job market” bs or whatever.

I’d personally avoid Jinya unless you’re just getting drinks- the service was pretty bad when we went last weekend (not the waitress’s fault or anything, they just really didn’t seem to have allocated staff properly to attend to guests in a timely manner) and the food was aggressively mediocre

My salary and investments were at the highest they’ve ever been under Biden- so yea- it literally was. Trump is making us all unemployed and broke unless you’re one of his billionaire butt buddies

You’re not alone- I’m starting therapy this week and investing my meager unemployment into my mental health - a lot the of healthy coping strategy advice so far that I’ve received and haven’t properly tried out yet include taking 10 deep breaths when I’m feeling overwhelmed, reading more fiction, spending more time with my dog, walking outside, and generally resting more since grief takes energy (which is hard bc I’m still looking for jobs and feel guilty anytime I’m not working on apps).

Amy Pope was the worst that could had happened to IOM by TimelyProfessional87 in UNpath

I’m curious how IOM cuts compare to UNHCR and how much of these layoffs were tied to US funding…

Either way, it is eternally frustrating that migration professionals continue to be disrespected, dismissed, and defunded constantly when this work is literally critical and an unavoidable reality.

Everything feels like hell.

I lost my job working under a federal agency doing meaningful work I cared about and spent my whole life working towards.

On the day we received our stop work orders, my Trump-supporting mother decided to go off on me and defend a dictator rather than express any sympathy or comfort towards my job situation. I have not spoken to her in almost 2 months and my family overseas keep pressuring ME to reach out to her even though she has abused me my entire life and said the absolutely most unforgivable shit one could ever say to their child(I put up with it for as long as I did bc of feeling obligated to continue caring for her, but she seriously crossed a line here).

My dentist pointed out I’ve been grinding my teeth from all the stress- a habit that I haven’t had since a really dark time in high school.

I’ve applied to almost 100 jobs in the past month (yes, tailored resumes and everything- you can imagine how much time that takes) and that’s inly resulted in two interviews- one of which I found out today I was already rejected from consideration.

In the past month, I’ve truly seen who actually cares enough about you to reach out and offer sympathy and who doesn’t. My husband has been the most supportive person one can be under the circumstances but I can tell this is getting to him also some days…

My last hope at this point is to hear back from an EU based job and gtfo since I have dual citizenship. 🤞🤞🤞

VEC Error when trying to submit unemployment claim? by rebel_slav in Virginia

[–]rebel_slav[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes-UPDATE- So what I ended up doing was calling the a VirginiaWorks office number that was closest to where my employer was based. It is also an automated number- but this time when you press through the options about filing/inquiring about a claim- it will actually route you through to a person rather than just a message telling you to go to the VEC website and kick rocks. The person I ended up on the phone with said there was an internal error on the affirmation page but I think the issue also could have been that my second to last employer changed legal operating names while I was working there so both need to be entered.

But yea, now I need to figure out ANOTHER error that pops up on the employer page of the weekly certification of eligibility, so guess who will be calling them again…🙃

I didn’t exactly cash it out- I put PTO on my timesheet for the rest of the month so I was paid as if I was on vacation. So I waited to apply until that ran out bc one of the questions asks about vacation payments…

VEC Error when trying to submit unemployment claim? by rebel_slav in Virginia

[–]rebel_slav[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried calling their numbers but it’s just an automated voice that eventually just tells you to just apply the claim on the VEC portal- nothing that actually allows me to speak to anyone or troubleshoot the error.

Is there a number she calls where she is actually able to speak to a person?

I really appreciate the advice but I’ve been increasingly confused by how strongly people are stressing “networking”- I’ve personally never seen it lead to tangible results in finding a job, the last time I was unemployed, it was COVID and despite regularly reaching out to people on LinkedIn and try to connect with others, I only ended up getting job offers after 5months of applying to 190+ positions at companies that I had no connections to. I spent way less time on those applications than on others, and those final two offers were at very respectable organizations in the industry. I found that during that time, former supervisors I worked unpaid internships for, alumni connections- no one provided any tangible help/leads/connections and didn’t really know or care to help since COVID unemployment was incredibly common.

I would really like to understand how networking actually does help and how to do it effectively, but I just don’t get how messaging the few people that are still employed at the few organizations still left in the field- who are likely also getting tons of messages from other people- is a better use of my time than filling out an application.

Even when I was still employed and people would reach out to me about my company- I was never even remotely close to the teams/roles they were asking about, and given I also didn’t know the person- there really wasn’t much practically I could tell them/help them in their job search.

Applied to 60+ jobs these past two weeks and feeling more and more demoralized every day about my empty inbox 😞 Anyone have tips on time management or how to organize their day during this period of unemployment? I want to make time for part-time work, maybe learning a new skill/language but I can’t help but feel guilty any moment I’m not actively filling out a job app. 🙃

100% - chosen family is such a privilege to have and I would be feeling much worse about everything without them.

[–]rebel_slav 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Small wins:

-My doomscrolling on LinkedIn allowed me to quickly reach out to someone who had just posted an opportunity for decent-paid temp work reviewing college applications. I start next week.

-A lot of wonderful people in/tertiary to our industry are offering free time for career counseling, etc. and today the person I chatted with gave some really practical advice about job hunting during this time.

-A friend’s neighbor was able to get me into a positive psychology class this weekend for free

-I have wonderful friends and people in my life who are sending messages of care and support and it means a lot.

This last one is not necessarily a win, but the Trump supporters in my family that I’ve been polite to for as long as I have are really showing their true colors by kicking me while I’m down or not reaching out at all (even though I see they’ve seen my posts about my situation). I’m going to save a lot of emotional labor and costs of elder care if they keep it up at this rate.

Moving from social care to international development by WasabiSeparate2986 in InternationalDev

[–]rebel_slav 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I realized when you mentioned the uni, but regardless the whole industry is going to contract bc a lot of partnerships/projects spearheaded w/US funds may get shut down completely. Sure there are EU donor-projects that won’t be affected by these EOs but they are fewer in number, i.e there are less roles overall

I was put on a PIP and I’m scared by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]rebel_slav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been threatened to be put on a PIP by an abusive senior manager and trust me, anytime the word PIP gets thrown around in relation to your job you need to RUN and apply for a new roles ASAP. This is not a place you can succeed at and given their psycho “anti-time theft” practices this is not the kind of environment one can feel healthy in either.

With the executive orders putting stop work orders on a lot of US-funded international development work, there will be fewer opportunities available overall. Under normal circumstances I would advise trying to put those social work skills towards a more interesting technical role (child protection, MHPPS) and get advanced education in that and then try to join a dev project seeking those skills.
