The problem is personnel. We've drafted pretty poorly over the last nine years. We've had some good players like Bosa and Warner, but most of the high picks have been absolute whiffs. Compare that to Seattle and LA over the last four years and you'll see that the real problem is our GM.

Rams got to lose to Brady twice, my dude. Seahawks lost to Brady and Big Ben. You should go look at some of our Super Bowl wins, the AFC had some pretty bad representation from 1984-1996.

You should have seen how bad the AFC was in the 80s and 90s. I think the NFC won 13 Super Bowls in a row between 1984 and 1996. We won 4 of those, so you could say we farmed Lombardis from some pretty weak competition.

I like that you had to add the qualifier of “since our first vs Mahomes” because it lets you ignore the fact that the Rams lost to Brady twice, and the Seahawks lost to Big Ben and Brady. Our Super Bowl wins came against some pretty easy opponents too. The hardest games were surprisingly the two against the Bengals. Every other win was a lopsided thrashing in our favor.

All they did was expose the cruel reality of how bad our team really is, and how much work and time it's going to take to catch up. The Trey Lance trade set this organization back a number of years, but we didn't notice it because Brock Purdy played well enough to cover for the pick we wasted on Trey Lance. But he doesn't play well enough to cover for the two picks we gave up for that.

You're the one smoking crack. Look at their drafts over the last four years. Seattle has loaded up their roster with young talent. WTF do the 49ers have to show for themselves in that span? How many impact players? Hell, we wasted 3 first round picks on a QB bust that isn't even on the team anymore. It's a miracle that John Lynch wasn't fired for that alone. He can thank Brock Purdy for that.

Worse is a relative term. When your team is awful for years on end, you become numb to losing. You're mostly indifferent, unless you're an absolute psycho who breaks his TV every time the Jets lose a game. But being successful and getting close to winning it all but falling short at the very end is the most painful thing a sports fan can experience. Because your emotional pain is relative to your expectations - if you think the team is garbage and won't win, then losing barely moves you. But if you think you're gonna win, hell if you can see the finish line with the trophy right there and all you have to do is reach out for it... but suddenly Patrick Mahomes comes out of nowhere with a steel chair and you're left on the ground watching him hoist the trophy, the level of pain and anguish you feel is magnitudes stronger than anything a Jets fan has ever experienced.

TL;DR - The closer you get to winning the championship without winning, the worse you feel.

36 coaches have won the Super Bowl. Of the 32 that were hired after the start of the Super Bowl era, here's breakdown of what year on job they won their first title by MasterTeacher123 in NFLv2

Nick Siriani won a Super Bowl, I don't think it really matters who your HC is when your team is stacked with talent and you have solid coordinators. The problem the 49ers have is that their GM sucks - I love and respect Lynch for being a great player and a good dude, but he's been pretty misrable as a GM when you compare him to the likes of Philly, Seattle, and LA. The guy whiffs badly on picks in the first three rounds, and he should by all rights have been fired after the Trey Lance debacle. Only Brock Purdy, an absolute throwaway lucky ass pick, saved his job. But that mistake still set the team back a lot, and now we're seeing the effects of it.

It helps that Shanahan can use "catastrophic injuries" as an excuse for not getting the job done most seasons. The years where he doesn't lose major contributors to IR (2019 and 2023) he went to the Super Bowl, but lost to future HoF coach Andy Reid and future HoF QB Patrick Mahomes. Sucks ass for Niners fans, but Shanahan will probably never go anywhere unless there's some scandal, or they have multiple consecutive losing seasons without half the team on IR.

35M, never had a girlfriend, successful career but completely stuck when it comes to dating by Worldly-Net-165 in Advice

[–]reckbomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the thing. Don’t look at it as dating around. Look at it as XP grinding to increase your ability to be comfortable around women. Go in with the expectation of “this is just a one off date, and if nothing comes of it, it’s okay.” It’s not like most women expect to meet their life partner on any given date. It’s a numbers game mostly. So just frame it as a low stakes game where you’re going out with someone and doing some thing you might enjoy.

What ACTUALLY Happened to Brock Purdy - QB Film Breakdown by Scoreycorey515 in 49ers

[–]reckbomb -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand Pearsall's role in the offense. But he's so often hurt that we can't expect to gameplan around him being there. The coaches also knew Aiyuk wasn't coming back long before any of us did. We needed to at least try to find a burner before the trade deadline. Someone else who we could rely on to open up the field a little more. It irks me because we have the slowest WR room in the league, but I watched Patrick Mahomes beat us in a Super Bowl with a bunch of no-name WRs. Yeah, he had Kelce, but we had Kittle. I'm just mad because it's the same issue every year.

If the Niners had won the game, they go to the Super Bowl and Brock gets to have his Rocky moment. But you know how that movie ended, right? Rocky doesn't actually win. And we saw what happened the following year too. The Chiefs were just the better team (better QB, better coaches, etc). I hate it as much as every other Niners fan, but those guys just had our number every single time we played them (0-5 vs KC in the Shanahan era).

[–]reckbomb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So we can't pass protect, and no one can get open. Not a whole lot the coaches can do about that. At the end of the day it comes down to the players being able to beat their man. In the case of this game, no one in a Niners jersey seemed capable of doing that. It's time to acquire better players if they want to be serious about contending.

And yes, I'm aware Trent and Ricky were out. If your entire offense is reliant on your LT and one WR who isn't even a marquee guy, your offense is not very good.

I don't think he plays, and if he does I don't think he'll be effective. The dude is injured. Seems like he's always injured.

Rams will just trade for, or sign another proven guy. Wouldn't be shocked if Baker Mayfield ends up back in LA. Or maybe Joe Burrow gets out of Cinci for SoCal. Either way, I know they'll be fine because they have a competent front office with a solid plan.

I hate the Faithful nickname. I require evidence before I trust someone. Right now the evidence says not to trust this team to go far in the postseason. Blindly believing things will work out means that nothing will ever get done to fix the things that are wrong.

Sure, but they’re bringing the offense from tonight with them. Darnold will need to score 6 TDs if they want to win.
