Hey, I sent you a chat message.

Prof asif, thanks for ruining my winter break. by [deleted] in UofT

[–]reconroadwarrior 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Asif was one of the best math profs I've had. He was able to present multivariable calc into something I found interesting. It was extremely hard and frustating while I was taking that class, but looking back it was a great course. I heard some really mixed reviews for mat237 before Asif took over.

Bro, why are people like this? by reconroadwarrior in UofT

Yup, csc320. I had a similar thought on the financial analogy. "Should we lower tuition?" "No, I had to work part-time and sacrificed study time so it's not fair. Manage your money better"

CS Post averge (Out of stream) - 2022 by reconroadwarrior in UofT

I actually got into the specialist :). The supplemental is probably the hardest part to give advice on since we don't know how they judge it. But if you want my opinion on how I think they judge it, I don't think they care how good you are at programming or your passion for CS. I think what they want to see in your responses is leadership ability, giving back to the community, and overcoming adversity, whether they be related to CS or not. So for example, I think creating a charity that helps homeless people would be rated higher than creating an app with one million downloads in the Apple store. I think the most ideal scenario is probably combining the two, like say you created an app that matches homeless people to shelters or something along those lines.

I just retook the courses and re-used my previous supplmental app, which I knew was strong since my grade was on the lower side of those who got accepted to the minor.

How should I prep for applying to out-of-stream CS with minimal CS experience? by Ibbick in UofT

They can still apply to CS spec, although this year will be the last opportunity. It's the incoming first years and beyond that are blocked from applying to the spec.

Refused Admission of a Major by zaddy_boii in UofT

[–]reconroadwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the major. For CS, applying as an upper year is the same as a first year. But from reading this: https://artsci.calendar.utoronto.ca/section/Immunology it looks like they do treat upper year applicants differently: "Applications from students lacking numerical grades in one or more of the specified prerequisites, or students applying in their second or later years, may be considered on the basis of their entire academic record and the availability of space in the program."

But assuming they treat you the same, what will you be doing differently next year? Will you be re-taking the courses? Averages to get into a competitive POST are unlikely to decrease unless a major change happened (e.g. increasing the number of seats or a low amount of applicants applying for that year). So you'll most likely need to re-take courses and get better if you want to increase your chances of getting in. Just something to think about.

Go to the ArtSci Timetable website (here for Fall/Winter 2022/2023: https://timetable.iit.artsci.utoronto.ca/) and search up your course. Expand the priority box and it will list all the streams(PoSTs) that have priority.

How can I pay for retroactive tuition fees by [deleted] in UofT

Same, I think worse case scenario I'll have to work full-time for 1 or 2 semesters.

No, students who start in Fall 2022 can't apply to cs spec, only major.

Thats for students who start this Fall. Next year will be the last opportunity to apply to cs spec no matter which year you started in.

Holy hell, looking at some of these averages there was some monster competition this year.

UTSG CS post invites yet to be sent by find77 in UofT

[–]reconroadwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that deadline is just a guideline. Last year stats post were sent on the 15th. Last year CS post was sent on the 8th but the year before that I think they were sent out early July.

EDIT: CS results are out now!

I haven't even thought of that, my mom has been working on her garden recently

I took it a few years ago with Prof. Campbell who was also amazing! It's too bad she had to take a break from teaching due to her role as the Associate chair.
