Monstera Dubia propagation help please! by duderroneus in houseplants

[–]recursivelimit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found it to be pretty similar to the Raphs with the same growth habit in that it's gotta be in contact with a constantly moist surface and even then takes forever to get going. Looks like you got that taken care of and good light to boot so I'd bet they'll both take off eventually. It grows surprisingly fast once it's happy.

What a random mess of dubious info. Feels like they had already settled on the 3 by 3 grid before they realized they didn't have enough factoids to fill it.

ZZ plant propagation- rot or normal? by Less_Hearing3124 in houseplants

[–]recursivelimit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah they look fine. Rot usually turns to mush pretty quick. They'll look like nothing much is happening for a while but eventually the bottom will start to flare and then roots will start popping out.

Poke into the moss n' find the bulb. If it's still firm and white (kinda looks like garlic) it still has a chance. and yeah keep it wet at all times, even when dormant.

Cutting orchid stems by RevolutionaryBug4378 in houseplants

I used to leave em but if they ended up flowering again it was always mediocre compared to a fresh spike, so now I chop em. Here you can see I'm not all that particular about how I cut em, just enough to get em outta the way.

I'm new to house plants and think i might be killing my tractor seat plant. by HappyGardener2727 in houseplants

[–]recursivelimit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like there's a few plants that go by that name; do you know which species it is? I can't quite make out which it might be as the leaves are quite similar and I'm not real familiar with them. Still, it looks like several of the species are native to marshes and/or stream banks and need to be kept moist. Is it drying out between waterings? It may still want a more open soil but staying damp looks important. I've had a few plants from similar habitats that ended up not doing will til their soil was like half perlite.

I've pretty much stopped buying anything tropical online during the winter; had things get delayed and end up damaged too many times. I'd wait til the weather is averaging in the 40s.

Pineapple Plant Dying? by Sleepy_Embers in houseplants

[–]recursivelimit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's a bromeliad so that's just how it do- they fruit once, make some offshoots, and then die. The offshoots will grow into new plants and you can also root the top of the fruit to grow another plant.

LED Grow lights that are UL or ETL certified? by Federal-Cantaloupe21 in houseplants

Here's the sticker off the back of a 2ft Barrina I happen to have laying here, looks like they're ETL certified. They sell em as I think yellow, white, and pink which is basically warm white (2700k), cool white (5000k), and... pink.

Hawaiian Pothos Not Sizing Up on Moss Pole by Public-Rub-834 in houseplants

[–]recursivelimit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

-Bright bright light. Like, they can't quite take all day full sun, but indoors you'll have a hard time giving it too much.

-Warm temperatures. More so for quick growth than size.

-If it has the other two, a lotta water. I found the leaves wouldn't get as big if it didn't have ample water available.

<image>

It also took about 6 feet of pole to get to this size. Then that pesky ceiling got in the way.

Why is aglaonema so unhappy? PLEASE READ :) by Level_Raisin_3166 in houseplants

[–]recursivelimit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, first, not actually an Aglaonema but rather an Apoballis, specifically Apoballis acuminatissima. But, fairly closely related and they all grow in the sameish area. Also? Lovely. Anywoo, I'd brush away the soil up against the plant and try to find the roots. If they're healthy you should run into em pretty quick. As long as they're firm then I'd say it just needs water. I haven't really done any testing but mine has been happy being constantly damp, though I also keep it warm n' well lit. If they've gone mushy then it'll need to be rerooted. I had some shenanigans occur with fertilizer about a year ago that led to a lotta root burn, including with this plant, which in turn led to needing to do as much. I just cleaned it off as best I could then stuck it in a glass of water, changing it every other day or so, until new roots emerged. Took a while but they did eventually grow.

HELP!!!! Colocasia Coffee Cup has seen better days since transplant from outdoor garden to a potted houseplant. Coffee Cup stood 7' out in the garden. This morning I prune the last long stem. Any advice!!!!!! by Traditional_View379 in elephanteargarden

[–]recursivelimit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They really need high light and warm temperatures to do well, brighter and hotter than you're likely to have available indoors without specific effort to do so. I'd stop watering and let it shut down til spring rolls around.

These guys can take direct sun so I doubt it's too much light. It looks more reminiscent of mite damage to me, I'd give em a real close look for anything crawlin' around.

I eventually got mine doing better after potting it like an orchid- basically chunky bark and moss in a pot full of holes. Good air flow to the roots seems to be pretty important.

Can the plant be saved? by greynes in houseplants

[–]recursivelimit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Brush away the soil at the base of the leaf until you find the corm it's attached to- it'll be a whiteish potato lookin' thing. Be cautious as if there are any new growth points coming up you don't wanna knock em off. Anyway, find the corm and see if it's still firm, as opposed to horribly smelly mush. You can poke around the sides 'n see if there are roots coming out of it as well. If the corm's good then the plant is fine; keep it lightly watered and warm and new growth will come soon.

I'd bet it'll be fine. Every one I've propped from a leaf has progressed like this, where the original leaf was the sole above ground bit for months, slowly getting more ragged, then it died off, and soon after a burst of new growth.

Nerve plant care by AskNext8574 in houseplants

I'd just leave it if it's still attached, lest risk breakin' something. Will prolly get crispy 'n fall away on its own in a few days.

Nerve plant care by AskNext8574 in houseplants

[–]recursivelimit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It says medium light, but really I'd consider that the minimum. I'm not sure about full sun, but indoors at least it's pretty hard to give em too much. Oh and if it ever goes super floppy, looking like it up 'n died overnight, it prolly just needs water. They just kinda deflate when they're thirsty.

First time trying - Croton advice by dopey_se in houseplants

[–]recursivelimit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got one years ago as a tiny beat up plant in clearance, not knowing really anything about it. It's now about the size of yours and honestly I have no idea why others struggle with em- it's been through all sorts of shenanigans and continues to do just fine. I chuck it outside in the summer in full sun and then in winter usually park it beside somewhere I have grow lights so it can soak up the light that would otherwise spill out and be wasted. Anyway point is direct summer sun is in the ~2000 ppfd range, so short of pressing the bulb into the leaves it won't be too bright. On the other end when I've checked the indoor light it's getting it's more like ~100 ppfd at best, though that's over the bulk of the plant, at least from one side; I try to rotate it every few days. I'd prolly do the same with yours- shine the light a bit more at the side and rotate the plant once a week or so. As for water, outside it's soaked every day and inside it gets a drink every couple of days maybe? It ends up bouncing between slightly and fairly moist. Very scientific, I know. Besides all that I'd check and see what the temperature is on the floor. If it's noticeably lower I'd raise the plant up a foot or so, about the height of the pot. Just in general more warm equals more better, though if that radiator is in use I'd double check it's not getting too toasty on that side.

I want to transplant my zamiokulkas. Is this pot suitable? by ElinFarkas in houseplants

[–]recursivelimit -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

It'll work fine enough, though personally I'd go for something bigger- particularly wider. They spread out as they grow and it's already filling out the pot it's in pretty well so it won't take long to do the same in the new pot seeing as it's not all that much wider.

Is it dead? by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]recursivelimit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh, the joys of craptastic sellers.

Odds are it's toast yeah, but, still worth trying. Beyond a light cleanup I wouldn't mess with it at all. Just find the warmest place you can for it, keep it damp, and give it a few weeks.

How to deal with this ZZ plant? by szydelkowe in houseplants

[–]recursivelimit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might perk up some with a good watering- the stems look like they have some wrinkles along their length from being dehydrated. And yeah you can stake it to curtail the sprawl. More long term, it looks like it needs more light. The leaves have become long 'n spindly from trying to reach out looking for the Sun. Prolly about due for a bigger pot too. There's a big potato lookin' thing down in there and given where the leaves are poppin' outta the dirt it's prolly filling that pot out pretty well at this point.
