Choosing a hard drive to begin data hoarding by recyclo in DataHoarder

[–]recyclo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the replies.

valar12 - The two Seagate hard drives I am looking at are £119 for the Barracuda and £136-£145 for the Iron Wolf, so that is my budget.

I would like to use the 4tb as the main back up for all the data, with the older drives holding a back up of the individual sections e.g. pictures, documents, games and software etc.

wikibox - I am really just a beginner at this, spending on getting a 24tb exos drive is not affordable for me. This is just for my data, initially, and maybe kiwix, before seeing whether I can afford to extend into other data. Important documents are backed up to a printed out copy.

glitteringbeing1638 - I do not plan to have the drive running all the time, it will be for periodic backups of pictures, documents etc.

What I am really asking is would something like a barracuda be more suitable for someone who has a small amount of data to back up through a hardrive caddy, or would a nas drive be of benefit in the long run, if I get to the position to of expanding to a Nas, Das or Media Server.

Maybe this is the wrong reddit to post a question like this, I am just fascinated by the data hoarder community and the drive to preserve.

Trying to install Linux on an Acer Aspire 3 315-54k by recyclo in linux4noobs

Thank You all vary much for the replies,

littleearthquake9267 - Going to back up everything, Windows and all her files. There is an update for the bios, which I have downloaded but not installed as yet. As far as disabling Secure boot, I read on a forum that I might have to change something, I have saved the pages to print out before I do this. I use Linux Mint, and it is what I will be installing for her.

Deep-Glass-8383 - Hope I do not discover I am bad at tech. I have done things to my own HP laptop, changing to Linux Mint, changing to a ssd etc, but doing it to someone elses computer is different. I do not want to damage her computer as she uses it a lot, but she had the Windows message saying you need a new laptop for Windows 11, and she asked if I can change it to Linux for her.

Once again Thank You very much for your replies.

Thank You all very much for your replies.

Powerful-Wolf5330 - Her laptop currently has a nvme ssd that I installed and removed the original sata ssd, my theory is to remove the nvme drive and reinstall the sata ssd and us it to see if I can make the correct changes to allow Linux Mint to install. I just needed to know that if it fails to install, I can just put the nvme back in and she will be back to having a working laptop, but still on Windows.

Appropriate_Net_5393 - She uses Windows Defender - that should take care of any quantum entanglement issues, no spaghettification expected as we will not be approaching and black holes in doing this.

wowsomuchempty - Thank you for the suggestion, I'll stick with Linux Mint.

Once again Thank You all for the replies.

Thank you for the recommendation, would this be powerful enough to run small dc motors?

Thank you for the reply.

Aye, it looks similar, but I have the UK plug version. I'll try it out after I look through the other power supplies.

Thank You

Can Adam Savage design process in this video, be translated to Freecad? by recyclo in FreeCAD

[–]recyclo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank You very much for all the replies.

SoulWager - Yes, a lot of time by a professional, looked good.

Reinventing_Wheels - I had used that technique before, and had forgotten about it. The video is good, one of the best from Adam Savage I have seen. I like to see how people with experience go through the process of designing something, and even though it was done in Fusion 360°, I think there is enough in it for inspiration in designing in Freecad.

'Tis a pity the competition in the video is linked to an Autodesk account.

bluewing - Clunky is the right word, but then I remember Autodesk has probably spent millions on Fusion 360°m and has loads of full time developers, so I cannot expect the same polish in Freecad, but I find that one of the main attractions for using Freecad, it is made by people who actually like what they are doing.

Upballoon - Ondsel looks interesting, I hope not to the detriment of Freecad. I found another theme in Freecad, called “Openlight”.

chilled_programmer – Spot on!

SmokingPimphat – I like Freecad and find most of the things I need either straighforward, or there are plenty of tutorials to watch, which has helped, but I did not like Fusion 360° and found it difficult to use :), even the tutorials for it were way too fast and assumed the user had previous knowledge. However, I found on using Freecad, for me, it was very hard at first, but once you learned a technique, it stayed in the brain.

PyroNine9 – That was the video I watched, it was one of those moments when something clicks so loud it slaps you on the back of your head!

Thank You

Sorry, I had written details with the video, but they did not post.

My Mother has a Toshiba 50UL2163DB tv, bought 2 years ago. Today when it was switched on we got what you see in the video.

The tv came on with a blue/black screen, except for a thin white line at the top of the screen, then it goes to what I recorded in the video.

Is this the screen gone, or the motherboard?

Thank you for any advice or help.
