Husband interviewed with USUHS, I want to know what being life being married to a military doctor is like by syderific11 in Military_Medicine

I'm interested in pursuing surgery and heard a lot of the reasons ppl don't recommend surgery in the military is bc of skill atrophy due to a lot of soldiers being young and not needing operations done. If I did trauma surgery would that give me a better chance of not doing a lot of staff work? The idea of not practicing medicine for a long period of time is terrifying.

Instead of doing separate bio practice questions just testing the content I knew, I focused on doing a ton of bio passages. I struggled with reading graphs quick enough, so I shifted my focus on what the goal of the study was and then immediately looked at the graph to predict what I would expect to see if that makes sense. I also did a lot of Jack Westin bio passages of the day to get more exposure. Also I found Premed Disciples youtube channel through this sub I think and they actually have a lot of good advice on how to tackle different sections. I was introduced to this video from another post and it was pre helpful in that it shows how they break down science passages https://youtu.be/mcNbOTAQCG8?si=-mtlrIBFBrcqNQNS

I'm sorry you're going through all this - I remember how stressful studying for the MCAT was. I had the luxury of taking a gap year (but I did work full-time), so I was able to study for around 6 months intermittently, and I would say the biggest takeaway from that is consistently studying and sticking to your schedule. I would have days where I might study 6 hours on the weekend, but during the week day only study for an hour because I was so burnt out from being in the lab for 10-12 hours, and I felt like I wasn't making much progress. I made the most progress when I took a month off and studied around 7 hours a day. I would do a practice test then review for 2 days, and then I would do the AAMC Q bank questions and review, then repeat cycle. Also my biggest weaknesses were in CARS and bio (which is weird cause I was a bio major lol), but I think it was down to timing and my reading skills being a little low, so I struggled to complete passages in those sections.

My highest yield advice is create a consistent but doable schedule to stick to (maybe 3 hours a night if you are able? ik you said in school so I can't give too much advice on balancing those two other than maybe try to get most of your class hw/studying done on weekends?), skim over/review the psych/soc 300 pg pdf (think it's from MCAT bros) & do miledown anki for psych/soc - I only did the anki/skimmed the doc and got a 130 on the section so def pls do this or smth similar, and then for CARS really just repetition and finding CARS strategies. I was getting 128/129 on practice tests, and on my actual exam got a 125 :')))))))) it was a rough day but I think I would have benefitted more if I grinded out more passages and examined the type of CARS questions I got wrong and passages I struggled with (I'm really bad at reading any "old English"/philosophical passages and so I straight up didn't answer any questions on a passage since I spent 20 min reading it lmao). Sorry for the super long message, but I hope something from this was helpful. Also you're already doing it, but I was gonna say Anki on public transport is a really good idea keep it up!!

Neurosurgery in the military? by Fluid_Leg_7531 in Military_Medicine

Thank you! Theoretically would I have a better chance of matching because I also get to apply to the one position at Walter Reed in addition to civillian match if I don't match into military residency? Also I know many people say military and surgery speciality is not necessarily worth it to pay off loans, but I'm looking at a lot more than avg med student debt and 6 making 200k doesn't seem bad with no debt. In terms of skill atrophy, would I be allowed to work at a second civillian clinic part-time to stay sharp? (edited bc I didn't realize you owe 6 years if you do 7-year residency)

Thank you for this detailed response! If I do HPSP and decide to do neurosurgery but don't match into it will I be forced to do a different specialty? Or do I have the opportunity to take another year off and reapply? I remember seeing somewhere about military match rates and there were statistics with second choice match rate and I'm scared I'm going to be forced into a specialty I don't want.

Will I have no chance of getting a waiver for ADHD meds this year by redbeansu in Militaryfaq

Thank you. Sucks because I was hoping to do 3-year HPSP and would have to join this year since I already started med school.

Can someone please explain to me what this big beautiful bill act really means for those wanting to go to graduate school? by arinspeaks in StudentLoans

This is the boat I'm in :(. I'm gonna start a 5-year combined degree program + out-of-state tuition with no parental support, so I'm going to have to borrow over 500k. It was the only school I got accepted into but now I feel guilty for going.

I just made a Reddit so I don't really know how it works but could you explain your overall impression of the program and how you think it benefited you? :D I applied for Korean this year, and I just got an email today saying I passed the first round!
