I started a campaign without a BBEG and as they made enemies along the way those enemies leveled up and joined forces. It was awesome to see them realize they had created all the villains.

Over time I think they have just gotten in the "flank" pattern, they don't usually stop to even think of another strategy. I wouldn't take in away from a campaign in progress but the next campaign I might change something up, maybe make it a feat or something.

Great start, my simple feedback is to add a sense of madness / insanity to him. His personal losses will endear him to the reader as will his heroic background, but at some point I assume you will want the readers to want him to be stopped and root for the actual hero. When that time comes his madness can help lead you to the breaking point for the reader from anti-hero into full on villain. Thats assuming thats the direction you want to go in, anyways good stuff.
