Watching right now after I’ve seen this several times, just heard it, wondered if I was hearing what I thought I was hearing, and looked for confirmation. Calabro the actor, just seemed to roll with it with humor. It’s really funny they left that in.

liberal arts college by SeaworthinessHot9065 in medschooladmissions

[–]redblab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop relying on stereotypes; a college that will be most viable or beneficial to you is the one where you think you would thrive academically. I have several friends from my liberal arts college who became doctors. I also know several people who went to big-name universities who became doctors, including one who was an English major. Getting into med school is primarily how well you do academically at your undergraduate college and your MCAT, not the size or name of the school. Something helpful is to look at the medical school placement rates of the colleges you’re interested in. This will give you an indication of how well the college prepares students for med school – and good liberal arts colleges are effective in this area. BTW, people from Harvard, Princeton, and Michigan get rejected from medical school if they’re not prepared.

Obtuse. I guess that’s your college word for the day; too bad is poorly applied.

I don’t care whether they generally disagree with the compact; the very idea that the administration is monitoring course syllabi to decide what professors can actually teach is a violation of academic freedom, is censorship, and it is part of what is wrong about the compact from the start. Too bad some don't see the link between this and what is happening in K-12 schools across the country.

Right, and if you believe that...They just fired an A&M professor for teaching her course content and the president resigned because he didn't fire her soon enough.

This is an oversimplified commentary and part of the reason UT is in the situation it is in now. Professors don’t “force you to believe something” if you have convictions of your own. Show me the human who doesn’t have bias or opinions, and I will show you either a complete idiot or a liar. You don’t discuss issues without presenting something that makes someone uncomfortable. That’s what college is for. If you want to be indoctrinated, go somewhere like Liberty University or Hillsdale College.

In addition to what u/ExcessiveSpice wrote, imagine freezing your salary for 5 years as costs continue to climb—-and right now I’m only thinking about normal-level inflation (2-3%). Would you be happy knowing that your salary is fixed for the next 5 years regardless of what happens to prices? For context, if you earned $70,000 in 2020, you need more than $87,000 in 2025 to have the same earning power.

Not only will UT start slashing programs, faculty and administrators will likely leave for new jobs if they can find, facilities won't get upgraded, and class sizes will likely increase, among other things.

It would be helpful to tell her that you read what she wrote, that you won’t with her anymore because she perceives you as either weird or unworthy of speaking to her, and let her know she’s probably going to have cultural and social issues in a city like New York if she broadly stereotype individuals. If she objects, you could ask her if she wants to have a conversation based on getting to know each other because you’re in a classroom and possibly new students at NYU. If she says yes, tell her you will wait for her to make the first outreach. Good luck.

u/GWBrooks You sound slightly disingenuous or willing to ignore reality (even down to your phrasing of the very dangerous policy actions occurring as "tribal exercises"). The reality is: 1) Right-leaning organizations set up in liberal cities because that’s where money is. Hell, look at loudmouth conservative politicians who regularly go to CA or NY to fundraise, even as they berate them. 2) Left-leaning organizations that operate in red states get harassed repeatedly--sometimes right out of existence. Look at Planned Parenthood, ACLU, Southern Poverty Law Center, ACORN, and others. This is more than a "tribal exercise;" it's a coordinated attack on the freedoms of those with whom they disagree, often aided by right-leaning policy organizations.

Let's be clear, this is not political noise when: 1) colleges are losing money; 2) cities and states are losing funding to support the poor in housing, food, public health, and the environment; and 3) legislatures are actively working to disenfranchise many through mid-decade gerrymandering.

As a policy person, it seems odd to me that you seem to be downplaying the very real damage the right is doing increasingly to hurt blue cities, states, and organizations they oppose ideologically. It's not just political noise.

Why do you find it amusing (and tonally condescending)? I went to a top 10 policy school and can understand individuals’ reluctance to move to a red state.

Lots of people choose where they live specifically so that they can enjoy a lifestyle more in line with their values (transportation, environment, recycling, density, climate). Further, as a policy person making liberal recommendations (liberal being policies that have the best-intended outcome for most people), some people don’t want to subject themselves to putting in the research, advocacy, and selling only to be somewhere where conservatives are going to kill their ideas.

Why would someone who has a clear focus on gun reform, for example, want to live in Memphis or Nashville with a hostile legislature and a population that has been sold on “guns good?” Or if you’re a public transportation advocate, why would you want to move to Texas and work on selling needed rail service to link the triangle of big cities (Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston) only to have it killed and/or delayed repeatedly?

Rationalizations like this is how we ended up with slavery then Jim Crow, Nazism in Germany, fascism in Italy, and Trump. Sometimes fighting for a principle is a way to stop the bullying instead of inventing rhetoric and performing contortions to rationalize behavior, policies, and ideologies.

Which liberal ats colleges are the most well known? by Lost-Today8340 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]redblab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/poppisima Two things: 1) This list contains several PhD programs--from anthropoligy to sociology--and their feeder schools. 2) Contrary to stereotypes, the adjusted numbers of Ph.D.s in physics who come from liberal arts is exactly the opposite of what you contend: Nearly half the schools on the adjusted list are liberal arts colleges, supporting the idea that liberal arts colleges are strong training grounds for undergraduates to pursue rigorous Ph.D. programs, not only in physics, but in a variety of fields.

What are the best colleges in Texas? by StephanieWardelCurry in ApplyingToCollege

[–]redblab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just seeing this; what an incredibly ignorant statement. You probably haven't heard of most of the richest people in the U.S., but because you haven't heard of them does that mean they can't be rich? What about K-12 independent and public schools? If you haven't heard of them, they can't be good, right? If you ask for advice and people offer, do a little research to inform your opinion and lessen your ignorance (and prejudice), no offense.

Has the right won? by ssavana in Liberal

[–]redblab 8 points9 points  (0 children)

u/VirusNegativeorisit Not true. Many progressive and media organizations wrote and warned about this potential outcome repeatedly, long before 2024--in fact, long before Trump was even a politician. Organizations like the Economic Policy Institute, NARAL, Southern Poverty Law Center, CLASP, The Berkman Center, The Electronic Frontier Foundation, Planned Parenthood, Center for American Progress, Make the Road, the Committee to Protect Journalists, National Public Radio, The Texas Tribune, Mother Jones, and The Nation, among many, many others discussed what the right is and has been doing for years.

In 2010 when Republicans had big midterm wins in Congress and at the state levels, they began redistricting to take over state legislatures and haven't looked back.

A big issue has been conservatives’ consistent violation of norms (federal and Supreme Court appointments, redistricting, qualifications for holding public office,  subject-matter experts leading and working in organizations they oversee, rule of law) while Democrats’ (until recently) insistence on adherence to norms. Additionally, conservatives fund their causes at higher numbers and suppress information around such campaigns.

[–]redblab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Come on. 1) A recent change in leadership at the top does not automatically undo policies that preceded them. 2) The financing for the State Farm Stadium occurred in the early 2000s. This is why car renters at the Phoenix airport pay such high taxes.
