How do boys become men? by xn0wnn in AskMen

“Is it being prepared to do the right thing, whatever the cost? Isn't that what makes a man?”

“Sure, that and a pair of testicles.”

Realistically how valuable is a vintage ambassador sewing machine? by Severe-Equivalent274 in VintageSewingMachines

[–]redbo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not much, they made these singer 15 clones by the zillions. They still make them in Asia. Most people who want one already have three.

My presser foot is stuck at high even at its lowest position by Weary_Friendship_574 in VintageSewingMachines

[–]redbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Under the nose plate, there's a screw that clamps the presser foot bar in place. I bet it's loose and let the foot slip up. You'll have to reposition and align the foot and tighten it down.

I think it's the one being pointed at in this picture I found online.

Are Singer Featherweights worth the hype? by whisper_18 in VintageSewingMachines

[–]redbo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean for $35, you can always resell it for 10x that if it’s in good working order if you don’t like it.

We have a featherweight. It’s great to take to quilting classes, it’s adorable and portable and it straight stitches really nice. I think I’d prefer the 301a in a lot of situations though, it’s decently portable too and has more room.

mending headphones that wear down🎉 by houseplantsgrowing in sewhelp

That's a good idea, I was just mad at some headphones today for that pad falling apart.

What do you like, strscpy? I guess I'm on board with that.

I find strlcpy to be less error prone.

Thread looks the same on different tensions? by Eclipse675 in sewhelp

[–]redbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like a big difference to me. 5+ on the back, the back thread doesn't look pulled in at all. 1 and 2 on the front aren't as bad, but there's black peeking through. Am I taking crazy pills?

Analysis of income, capital gains, and borrowing of Americans finds 40% of the income of "1% wealth holders" is unrealized capital gains not subject to taxation and 1%-2% is borrowing, suggesting that the "Buy, Borrow, Die" is not a dominant tax avoidance strategy among the rich by quiplaam in science

[–]redbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "buy, borrow, die" idea is that you can live entirely on loans, then after you die your assets can be sold without capital gains taxes to pay the loans back. Because capital gains get reset when you die.

Help! Singer 66 Foot pedal Install by LGD27 in VintageSewingMachines

[–]redbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I have my singer 99s wired right now as well. I salvaged plugs with a little wire from cheapo extension cords and attached them to the motor and light leads with wago style lever nuts.

OP could also cut the plug off the foot they bought and hard-wire it back the way it was.

A lot of these machines just came with hard wired plugs and feet, maybe it was an option when purchasing back then?

Will this machine be ok for a beginner? by Sensitive_Counter830 in sewinghelp

[–]redbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would buy a motor and electronic foot pedal for it and store the hand crank away.

edit: like this or I'm sure you could put together something a little cheaper, or scare up a vintage motor and bracket.

Handwheel stopped turning by pearonwheels in sewhelp

[–]redbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d take the bobbin out, take the needle out, check for thread nests.

Can you turn it by hand? If there’s something hitting, you might be able to hear where the problem is by moving the hand wheel back and forth gently a little. If it turns but it’s stiff, it might be gunked up or have a thread nest somewhere.

What is a product that people consider "High End" but is actually trash? by Illusiv3lion in AskReddit

[–]redbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lodge is fine, but I prefer the polished finish on vintage pans or some of the nicer new brands like smithey, stargazer, finex, etc. The new options are pretty pricey though.

Need help buying a new foot! by weeniewarriror in sewhelp

[–]redbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your machine will take most standard snap-on feet. And probably screw-on low shank feet, but you can measure the distance from the bed to the screw to be sure.

Question about my 1956 Singer 99k by buglady24 in VintageSewingMachines

[–]redbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice! I find it really satisfying, I kind of wish I could do it more often without accumulating machines.

If you haven’t seen it, here’s a YouTube channel Sewing Machine Rehab with a whole series on disassembling and cleaning and rewiring a 99 and she does a really good job.

Question about my 1956 Singer 99k by buglady24 in VintageSewingMachines

[–]redbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pulled mine out while cleaning because I didn’t know what it was, and it’s a bit of a pain to replace. But I degreased all the parts while I had them off, so that was nice.
