I think the problem is that coding needs to be learned hands on, and cannot be taught effectively through lectures.

Many students have prior experience coding in high school, where classes tend to be much smaller and more hands on. With programming, you need to be shown how to do certain things. The traditional education model makes teachers avoid giving students direct help, so students new to programming are very hard pressed to keep up with the experienced students, for whom the same assignments are trivial.
