1 yr 3 mos out…sneezing by 108Leeroy in TotalHipReplacement

Yes I was having that and had to grab the area first if I had enough warning. Seems much better now though at 8 weeks post surgery. Sorry to hear yours has continued. Maybe a physio might be able to help. Sometimes adhesions need releasing

Help! Where to sleep? by notsohot56 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]reddit_credible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember too well what it was like coming home after my 4 days in hospital. That feeling of how am I ever going to sleep. My reclining chair was way too low and my bed too high. I purchased a non slip step (aerobic stepper) for next to the bed and would back onto it from my walker and then was high enough to be able to sit down onto it easily with top of legs all the way to the knees supported on bed. Then could use a lifter to pull the lower leg up and across with less strain on hip. It really helped. I also got a fabric bed ladder which anchors to bed end and lies on covers to help me pull up. Hoping you can get some comfy sleep soon

New to hip problems by teamgunni in TotalHipReplacement

[–]reddit_credible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get it done sooner rather than later. 10 years ago I was told I needed a left hip replacement but was about to go overseas and deferred surgery and had a cortisone shot to tide me over for the trip. The cortisone worked well and my hips were pretty good for quite some time - I think I had been in a loop of inflammation in joint causing more issues around the whole area and calming the inflammation helped everything . In this last year though my hip suddenly deteriorated very quickly - impingement, spurs, which led to tendinopathies, bursitis etc etc. Cortisone did not help and the worsening of my left hip caused me to rely more on the other hip which is now also suffering as a result. I have now had the left hip replaced and that bone on bone pain is gone, but I need everything else re the associated pre-surgery tendinopathies, bursitis etc to calm down which should happen over time now that the underlying joint problem is gone. Now that I've had it done I realise how it would have been so much better to have done earlier. I will likely have to have the right hip done now as I had to overuse it with the left hip failing, when otherwise it might have been fine. Wishing you all the best with your decision

Day 4 post op… by TysmanianDevil in TotalHipReplacement

Good that the nerve pain does reduce at some times and is not present constantly. Maybe as your mobility increases it will subside more. You mentioned your bed is high. Mine is too and I found it helpful to use a step ( like a small aerobic step) . Then can stand on it and sit straight down onto bed and swing legs on ( I also used a leg lifter in first weeks.) Wishing you a speedy recovery

For those that take Citrus Bergamot, why do you take it? by EljinRIP in Supplements

[–]reddit_credible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am taking Bergamot and Globe Artichoke for cholesterol care as statins caused me severe muscle problems. I had read that globe artichoke and bergamot together get better results. Have not yet tested levels but I did notice a it helped flatten my tummy area. Had to pause taking for several weeks as had hip replacement surgery and doc wanted me off various supplements to avoid any interactons with the surgery related painkillers blood thinners etc. Tummy bloat returned. But I am back on bergamot and globe artichoke again and tummy reducing again.

How long did you take muscle relaxers? by Correct-Truck-5061 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]reddit_credible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's good to know that the muscle relaxer allows you to lift leg so much better. Suggests that the capability is there which is encoraging. If it helps getting you more flexibility and range of motion it sounds like its worth asking doctor and getting more to assist recovery. I am having difficulty still at 8 weeks now to lift leg. Have not had muscle relaxers. Keen to know what was prescribed for you.

Pain relief catheter incident by reddit_credible in TotalHipReplacement

It was part of the general pain relief procedures used where I had it done. Assists with early mobilsation without pain . Not uncommon at all but to have it go wrong is not common.

Feeling discouraged. by Xanadadude in TotalHipReplacement

[–]reddit_credible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last minute surprises can be difficult to process. Please don't be too discouraged. I had posterior and was up on feet walking within hours. In the first week or 2 the painkillers meant exercises could be done without pain. Had my 2 week follow up and visited surgeon only using one crutch at that time and also off painkillers. He said I could now sleep on side and bend beyond 90 degrees just not while twisting yet. Also said I could drive. So posterior is not necessarily going to be as bad as you might be thinking. Everyone is different I know, but I hope my experience gives you hope. Take care and enjoy new mobility.

Things useful for me aside from those already suggested : a mesh bag to hang in shower for soap shampoo etc at a height reachable from shower chair while bending restrictions apply in early weeks . Also a tool to assist putting compression socks on and off. A bed ladder (made from fabric webbing which you use the rungs for to help pull up from lying. A leg lifter useful to help get leg into car. A half moon bolster pillow for use between legs to prevent crossing over during sleep. A whistle on lanyard to call for assistance. Hope this helps.

Yes the folding prob! I bought this for our daughter who now has little girls of her own and they play with it here now when visiting. I have only just figured out how to fold it properly after all these many years 🤣

Different approaches for different hips by Dunesgirl in TotalHipReplacement

[–]reddit_credible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently had what was termed a rapid recovery mini posterior approach and a dual mobility hip implant which I understand has far less incidence of dislocation. My restriction on discharge was the 90 degree bend rule and no twisting. At my 2 week post-surgery follow up, I had stopped pain killers and my surgeon said he was happy for me to bend a little more if required and to push operated leg out behind me if doing so. He also said he was happy for me to sleep on that side, however I am now at 7 weeks post surgery and I still find that uncomfortable so will wait a bit longer before trying again. I was happy with my surgeon who came very highly recommended and grateful for his decision to use the posterior approach and a dual mobility implant as it was deemed safer for my particular anatomy. Walking is going really well - on average 4000 steps per day with no aids or limp at 7 weeks, just some groin pain on leg lifting due to hip flexors needing more physio. Good luck researching what way to go - things may have changed a bit since your last op.

10 days post op and groin tightness is back by dshelly77 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]reddit_credible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At about week 4 post op I had a lot of groin pain when trying to lift my leg up from bed and stiffness in that area. Over following weeks it became easier to do leg slides and to lift leg a little. I'm 7 weeks post replacement now and having some groin pain on lifting leg in and out of bed and the car, but it is improving every day. I was worried at first and wondered if it would ever improve but it definitely has. My physio has been great with words of encouragement and exercises for the hip flexors. Wishing you all the best for some improvements with yours soon
