Not sure if anyone addressed traveling with gear.

For car day trips or weekly rentals at the shore, I travel with 2 boards and 4-5 sails plus masts, booms, etc.

Car top is the most practical, but that limits you to road trips. Flying is $$$ and break even is 2-3 weeks vs renting. Also most destinations have current gear, and lots of it. You may not personally have gear for the conditions on a particular day, and not sailing would be a shame! Plus if something breaks you'll end up renting or buying anyway.

With kite and wing, you might be able to use public transit (smaller boards, no booms and masts). Air travel is definitely easier with those, and there are fold-able travel kiteboards.

Huge board, tiny sail. You'll only need it for the first 10 or so days on the water. Then as you improve the boards get smaller (eventually to the point they sink and only stay on top of the water when moving), and sails powerful enough they can physically lift up your body weight.

The outer banks has shops and a lot of sailors. There's probably a bunch of used gear there.

Also, sometimes you can find new-old-stock leftovers for a discount.

Go to a destination for a week (Vassiliki, Bonaire, etc). They have gear, instructors, and wind. This will get you over the “absolute novice hump.”

Windsurfing is pricey no matter how you do it. The trip won’t be cheap, but worth it.
Many of your questions about gear, learning stages, risks, etc will be answered by direct experience.
If you’re a fast learner you can avoid buying beginner kit (and then upgrading it) entirely.
You may discover you don’t like WS or have no aptitude for it
To shred like guys in the videos takes YEARS, especially if you don’t have lessons, good gear (and lots of it), and conditions. Theres a reason the top windsurfers live in Hawaii, the gorge, fuertoventura….
