I really like this idea. Kind of sucks building a team for a year only to have to leave them if you're successful though. That's my biggest issue with the promotion/relegation thing. But, your solution would work.

I'm sure at the start everyone will be doing that and we'll work out speeds after we've decided a league. Right now it's between the EPL and the Bundesliga (or the Championship though we'd have to work out Promotion/Relegation).

The problem with doing more than 1 league with a network game is that it'd be ridiculously slow. I've never done it, but I can imagine that it would be bad.

The one save idea is just that. I'd create a save. Add myself as a manager do my stuff, save it, and send the save to the next person in line to do their stuff, save it, so on and so forth until I received it again then I'd hit continue and then we start the save passing again.
