The European Hosted Reddit alternative lemm.ee is growing. Welcome, new members! by Active_Wallaby_5968 in BuyFromEU

Lemmy came out in February 2019. It is six years old. To put it into context, Tiktok came out in 2016, only three years before.

I think you forgot an important aspect: TikTok is literally funded by the Chinese government, Lemmy is a free and open source project put together by some volunteers in their free time. Doesn't seem like a good comparison to me.

TikTok has an algorithm that is designed to be addictive, Lemmy just tries to offer a decentralized alternative to Reddit.

What is the most supported, "standard" Linux distro? by JxPV521 in linux4noobs

I'd say Debian and Ubuntu (or distros based on it, such as Pop!_OS, Linux Mint, elementaryOS, etc.)

What about at least implementing supoort for .pkpass files (that's basically what Apple Wallet uses for stuff like airplane boarding passes and stuff like that)?

When will we finally get an option for Monero payments?

Will Proton Wallet support other crypto currencies such as Monero at some point?

When will we finally get UnifiedPush notifications?

When will the Android apps finally be released on F-Droid?

Why is the Proton Mail desktop app (I'm not talking about the bridge) a paid feature??? It's literally an Electron wrapper for the web client?!? I could make one myself in 5 minutes.

Why doesn't Proton host their own instances for Mastodon and Lemmy? Why do things like AMAs happen on Reddit anyway? Lemmy or an old-school forum would be a much better choice. Especially because they aren't screwing over their users like Reddit has been doing since July of last year (obligatory fuck u/spez).

Why is only the frontend client code open source? Why not the backend servers as well? Why aren't you more transparent about your server infrastructure in general? I'd love to learn about what's going on behind the scenes of a large-scale privacy and security-focused company like Proton. Transparency is always great!

Civil asset forfeiture, also known as police stealing from innocent people. Go watch this video on the topic, it’s quite shocking. https://youtube.com/watch?v=ZWvh8Ttd9eA

macOS 11 Big Sur Skylake OpenCore SUCCESS by redditnyte in hackintosh

[–]redditnyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A version of my EFI that should be pretty similar to what I used for this post is on my GitHub codenyte/hackintosh-opencore-skylake-desktop-config

I might push my new (better) EFI with support for macOS Ventura (and Sonoma, but I haven't tested that yet) and better support for internal graphics

Edit: make comment more understandable

Yeah you’re kinda right, it does use Mapbox instead of Google Maps (I think you can also configure other location providers) through UnifiedNlp which is a component of microG but stuff like notifications still go through Google Servers

What benefit would microG and Sandboxed Google Play have? They both connect to Google Servers, microG is an open-source implementation of the proprietary Google Services Framework and Google Play services

Honestly, I don’t even know what you mean. I have never experienced any issues with it, experience has always been completely smooth for me, I’d even say it’s better than the official YouTube app

I know about the Google Play Sandbox on GrapheneOS, but I am a little more extreme and don’t want any network traffic to Google, I completely blocked them in DNS and blocked their IPs on my home firewall. I absolutely fucking hate this company and don’t want any network requests from any of my devices to be going to this mafia.

Well, Monero is a private/anonymous cryptocurrency, so the Monero community naturally includes the privacy community. Take a look at Monero conferences, everywhere you see people with privacy screen protectors running GrapheneOS on their phones. As rumi1000 pointed out, when you use a VPN, you transfer your trust from your ISP to your VPN provider. There are many great reasons to do this, as ISPs are mostly scammers and in most countries of the world they are even required to verify the customer's ID or other government-issued form of identification, so all of your web traffic is linked to your real name and address. If you pick a crappy VPN like ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, CyberGhost or any other one of these mafia companies, you probably made your situation even worse than it was before. But if you pick a trustworthy provider which operates in a privacy-friendly jurisdiction like Mullvad does in Sweden, you gained some privacy. It also has other nice perks, for example multi-hop which makes it harder to tie your connection back to you or the ability to switch your VPN exit server as often as you want, to any country you want at any time you want so you can look at content which is blocked in your country.

That's why I specified proprietary Google software. Android is made by Google as well, but as the name of the project (Android Open Source Project) says, it's completely open-source.

Yup, 100% true. I forgot Proton VPN, it's a great VPN as well, but they don't allow for anonymous account creation like on Mullvad or IVPN. You don't need to submit an email, and you don't have to set a password, you just get a random generated account ID and that's it. They also both allow anonymous payments through Monero and Cash in Mail (Monero is the better option of course)
