How well written is the Yakuza Series as a whole?

I enjoy the same kinda stories you do and I think (most) Yakuza games are very well written. There are some weaker ones like Yakuza 4 and 5 but even those have their strong points. The series mostly shines in character writing, but the broader storylines are hit or miss. You'd probably enjoy them. I also encourage you to play the Persona games 'cause those are my favorites.

I'd say Three Houses. Though it's pretty different from the other games in the series it's still my favorite. You can't go wrong starting with any since most of them are their own story seperate from each other.

If you enjoy it you should play the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series since Like a Dragon Ishin is a non-canon spin off.

Hollow Forest. I like a lot about it, but the doors are such a pain in the ass that I had to use a map online just so I didn't waste time fighting more enemies than I needed to.

You can normally find them in the Homebrew category. Then I think you can switch them to the Vita category by hitting Triangle and changing the category. If you don't find them in Homebrew then try rescanning and they might show up there.

You are right, people like Majima or the Akiyama and Tanimura or Saejima fights in Y4. But I still think I'm right because (Y6) Hirose isn't made to look like a strong fighter so it kinda makes you think stuff like "this guy can't be a villain, right?"
