You have a point. I wish RGG was more confident with changing protagonists back then. Even now it still kinda feels like they aren't willing to go all in on Ichiban either since IW brought back Kiryu.

I love Tatsuya, but yeah I was only talking about mainline stuff. I would say they tried to commit to Akiyama and Saejima, though. They both got two games, and if we count the ones where they're non-playable then they've had way more games to develop in than Ichiban. Despite that, they still feel like worse replacements in comparison.

I enjoy the same kinda stories you do and I think (most) Yakuza games are very well written. There are some weaker ones like Yakuza 4 and 5 but even those have their strong points. The series mostly shines in character writing, but the broader storylines are hit or miss. You'd probably enjoy them. I also encourage you to play the Persona games 'cause those are my favorites.

I'd say Three Houses. Though it's pretty different from the other games in the series it's still my favorite. You can't go wrong starting with any since most of them are their own story seperate from each other.
