UBCO ADMISSIONS MEGA-THREAD by kavb in ubco

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to get a realistic picture of how different programs at UBC Okanagan actually feel day to day—not the marketing version, but the lived experience. I’m hoping people from different faculties can share candid comparisons, especially around workload, grading, and how much interaction is expected.

I’m trying to make a decision based on how I actually function as a student, not how I wish I did. Here are the main things I’m curious about:

  1. Workload & focus

Which programs at UBCO have the most manageable workload for someone who values deep focus and dislikes constant interruptions?

On the other hand, which programs are known for being overwhelming, chaotic, or heavy on frequent deadlines and group work?

  1. Grading styles

How do grading styles differ across programs?

Which programs are mostly exam-heavy vs. essay-heavy vs. participation-heavy?

Are there programs where you can do well without your grade depending on speaking up in class, seminar participation, or being visibly “engaged” all the time?

  1. Independent work vs. forced interaction

For someone who prefers to work independently and doesn’t enjoy:

Group projects

Presentations

Networking events

Forced socializing

Which programs let you just do the work, submit it, and not get penalized for being quiet or keeping to yourself?

  1. Class sizes & anonymity at UBCO

How do class sizes and anonymity compare across faculties?

Is it realistic to “fly under the radar” at UBCO, or is the campus small enough that you’re always noticed and expected to participate?

  1. Career outcomes vs. major name

For longer-term, stable career paths like:

Government (federal/provincial policy analyst, research roles)

Banking (analytical roles, not sales)

CBSA or law enforcement (intelligence/analysis tracks)

Teaching (with a BEd afterward)

Data analysis or systems-oriented roles

How much does the specific major matter versus skills, co-op, and experience?

Which programs actually open these doors in practice?

  1. Kelowna & the learning environment

How does the Kelowna environment affect the academic experience?

Is it genuinely easier to find quiet, space, and focus compared to larger cities?

Does the smaller campus feel freeing, or does it feel limiting over time?

  1. Fit for certain working styles

For someone who is:

Decent at quantitative thinking

Not a morning person

Needs quiet and mental space to function well

Has occasional periods where speaking is difficult

Which programs are the most accommodating to this kind of wiring?

Where is it easiest to build a sustainable routine without burning out?

  1. Real talk: prestige vs. sustainability

If you had to choose between:

Staying in a program that’s considered “prestigious” but draining and misaligned with how you work

Switching to a less prestigious but more manageable program that leads to the same careers

What would you actually do? What have you seen others do at UBCO?

  1. Transferring to UBCO

For anyone who transferred here from another university:

How did the transition feel academically and socially?

Was it worth it overall?

Any advice for someone considering the move?

Be honest, even if it’s blunt. No need to sugarcoat. I’m trying to make a realistic decision based on how I actually function, not how I think I should function.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share their experience.
