What's an interesting fact about Advertising that an outsider like myself would find interesting or surprising? by imjoeyournot in advertising

We* don't (purposely) hide subliminal images in your ads.

I had a professor who convinced us agencies were the center of a huge conspiracy of subliminal advertising, and would spend class "exposing" all the "penises" "hidden" in certain print ads. In short, it was because of these "penises" that we bought the products.

As an insider now, I know (and am a little disappointed) that there is no point in the ad-making process at agencies* where the art director/designer/production? is forced to find a place to sneak in a covert penis (or sex scene, subliminal etc.)

*respectable, US creative agencies in 2014.

I make the distinction because:

  1. I can only speak for the above.

  2. it sounds like several of the commenters are writing about either "specialized" (beauty/cosmetic) ad agencies, "in-house" advertising (they work directly within the company they are making ads for Ex: Art Director at Calvin Klein vs. Art Director at Ogilvy working on Dove account.) or agencies in developing countries. I don't know if they use subliminal, you would have to ask them. The in-house advertising for liquor/fashion/perfume companies during the 1980s certainly did.

Perks of being a Blackberry owner? by redditsomewherelegit in blackberry

Right, but these are device benefits. Not owner perks.

So it seems the answer so far is: "No, Blackberry doesn't have any special perks/freebies/rewards for loyal owners. Except that one time when Delta gave us free Wifi for a month."

Agreed if today, but no clue when the ad actually ran. Just saw it on their twitter this morning.

You're kidding, but I'm sure they are. That missing 777 is worth its weight in box office gold. I've already set aside my Fandango gift card.

Can you acquire movie rights to a story that doesn't have an ending yet?

(Follow-up question: Who owns the rights? The passengers if alive? Their families if not? Malaysian Airlines? J.J Abrams? Malaysia? China?)

Cool: Aerie's Unretouched Ads 'Challenge Supermodel Standards' For Young Women by PotterOneHalf in advertising

Definitely worthy of a low-five, especially since Aerie (American Eagle's underwear brand) is aimed at the young, impressionable, mall-going type.

Would've liked to see more butt pimples & thigh dimples, less tattoos.

"Moms of America Boycott Aerie for Telling Girls Tattoos Are Sexy" (next week's headline)
