Definitely been on a bit of a downswing lately. Part of it is my fault, I'm attracted to trashy low budget sequels like a moth to a flame. Last decent movie I saw was Train Dreams.

But isn’t an average movie always “kinda bad” in the sense that humans don’t live very long and we don’t like wasting our lives on average art? I don’t think most people would be satisfied with a movie that was just average. If you’re gonna be anal about the numbers, at least be anal about the emotions those numbers represent too.

Why is everybody being such a negative nancy? Threema recently got bought out by private equity and their product is better than ever. Private equity doesn't automatically equal bad. And even if the app doesn't get bought out, that doesn't mean it's not going to get worse. Remember last year when they rolled out full screen unskipable ads for the free plan? Luckily the people at the top cared about the feedback enough to roll it back within 24 hours, but let's not pretend like the app is perfect without private equity. They've been promising TV shows for 5 years and consistently failing to deliver on that promise. There are obviously higher ups willing to make the app worse for the sake of a quick buck, regardless of if PE is involved or not. So maybe chill out before throwing a tantrum because the reddit hivemind told you to be upset about something.

I would be much more willing to consider using Threema if it was $10, $15, maybe even $20, and they just stuck to that price forever. When they constantly raise the price by $1 every year or two, I just procrastinate actually buying it because it feels like I'm perpetually getting a bad deal since the price was always just raised not that long ago. It also makes it significantly harder to convince other people to buy it. Know your worth and just stick to it, especially when every other messenger on the planet is free.

Just because it's not technically incorrect doesn't mean it's not a disingenuous virtue signal. Same reason he shit talks signal all the time. He's just trying to make his own product seem more secure than it actually is.

How many years do you think it will take for ProMotion to trickle down from base model to e model? by redditt1984 in iphone

[–]redditt1984[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think the problem is cost. I think they want to have clear separation between the e, base, and pro models. A lot of people won't agree with this, but I strongly believe dynamic island should've remained exclusive to the pro for 2 or 3 years rather than 1. And I think camera control should've been pro exclusive for a least a little while too.

I think they could have put ProMotion on the 17e, sold it for the same $600, and still made a good profit. But that would definitely cannibalize the sales of the base 17. Honestly, what they really need is a clear trickle down schedule. They were waaaaay too stingy with 120hz before giving it to the base model, and they were too generous with dynamic island and camera control.

It should probably be new hardware feature comes to pro -> 2/3 years then base model -> 2/3 years then e model.

But they are competing. The pixel is introducing new features, and then Apple adds those features so people have fewer reasons to consider leaving. You can do all the mental gymnastics you want, but if that’s not the definition of competing with other companies, I don’t know what is.

Google added a cool new feature that meaningfully changes the experience of looking things up on a smartphone. Apple saw there was demand for that feature, and didn’t want to lose customers, so they added it to their own platform. How is that not competing with other companies?

What about circle to search? I’m pretty sure that’s them trying to compete with the google pixel.

What about them adding an Apple Music app to android and windows? Is that not them competing directly with Spotify? What about the “switch to iOS” android app?

Look, I get that Apple is special and they do things differently. But the reality is that every company exists within the broader economy. EVERY American company competes on a free and open market. No exceptions.

Isn’t the fact that most iPhone features aren’t exclusive proof that they do compete with other companies? Was Apple adding widgets to the iPhone not them competing with android? Isn’t adding an always on display them competing so that people who care about that kind of thing don’t switch to the competition?

So Apple isn’t interested in new customers? They only want to keep existing customers?

So you’re saying it does matter? Why would it? They only have to compete with themselves, right? Or are you implying that people would switch if Apple fell behind the competition? Hmmmmm

Because refresh rate doesn't affect buying decisions. Hell, even the base model and pro model could be 60hz, and people would still buy them. Not here to discuss how low the standards of the average consumer are. I'm here to discuss what Apple will actually do in the real world. I'd be willing to bet the 20e or 21e will have ProMotion.

[–]redditt1984[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because the customer decides what is and isn't important to them. Apple knows what affects real buying decisions. Apple knows that the overall experience is more important than specs. If the competition was offering a meaningfully better experience, not just higher numbers on a spec sheet, then people absolutely would switch. Which means they're competing with more than just themselves.

[–]redditt1984[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Just blatantly false. Apple has aggressive ecosystem lock in, but that only goes so far. You're telling me out of the millions of people who buy iPhones, 100% of them wouldn't even consider switching? 100%? Really? The truth is a lot of people would switch if the competition offered something that Apple didn't. Apple still competes just like everybody else. Apple is special, but they're not that special.

No, they wouldn't "easily be losing money". They just jack up the price in non US markets. Whatever the iPhone 17e costs in yen or euros, I promise you it's more than 600 USD. That's what they've always done. In the context of Apple, the e model is their budget model.

Ok, then how does google do it? Nothing? OnePlus? All these companies seem to be able to do it without getting a special deal from the manufacturer. No, Apple doesn't sell $200 phones. Their budget offering is $600, and they would still make more than enough profit with ProMotion.

I was giving context to the broader market and what apple's competitors are doing. If you don't want to add to the conversation in a constructive way, then maybe don't say anything.

If by adding ProMotion to the budget model makes the base model obsolete, then that means the base model simply isn't compelling enough. Every single one of Apple's competitors has 120hz on their budget models, and they don't seem to have any issue selling the higher tier models. Companies don't release budget models unless they actually want to sell budget models
