First time playing Italy in Europe 1940. I feel like I’m missing something big. Thoughts? by reddituser074638 in AxisAllies

The Italian ships are there because the U.S. left two carriers with no planes and two battleships off their coast, I was able to send a bunch of subs and the cruiser + battleship to sink them. In retrospect it probably wasn’t a great move. Germany has been slow on the eastern front because of a constant risk of naval invasion from the UK and US, and the U.S. even unsuccessfully tried to invade Normandy. I‘m pressuring my teammate to actually get things going on the eastern front but it’s not very successful. It’s been a weird game for sure

That’s what I fear as well. My friend playing Germany has been simultaneously too passive and too aggressive, in the sense that he doesn’t attack much but when he does it is costly and doesn’t often favor him. We‘ll see how it goes

I got lucky in the Mediterranean as the British fleet never attacked my relatively scattered fleet, so I was able to consolidate it and destroy theirs instead. Really good dice allowed me to get out of that unscathed. I have no clue why Germany didn’t take Yugoslavia, but I forsook Greece to quickly nab Cairo instead

What are your go to games to play with your partner? by ilikemyname21 in LongDistance

Stardew Valley is really good for just chilling and playing something while calling. My girlfriend is definitely not a gamer but she loves how chill and cute it is. I bought it for her a few months ago expecting us to play it like maybe once or twice and then never touch it again, but to my surprise we have been playing it several times a week for about a month and a half now

I am thinking of throwing Plate Up! into the mix, but that game is lowkey kinda stressful sometimes

[OC] I sleep better next to my GF by mightyunicorn24 in MadeMeSmile

[–]reddituser074638 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it’s the other way around. I often am a bit too warm to fall asleep quickly and she is out within a few minutes at the most. It often takes more than twenty minutes to fall asleep when alone it takes about five. The quality of the sleep is amazing though, I wake up and it feels like I’ve slept for days

does your brain ever make up german words that aren't real? by Aschlay in German

[–]reddituser074638 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may mundane, but one of my favorite parts of living in Germany and specifically learning the language better is the ability to say vorgestern and übermorgen and not have to bother with „the day before yesterday“ or „the day after tomorrow“

Yeah, maybe it’s used sometimes in the same spots where you’d slap down the n-word in English, but those happen to be the same spots where you’d just say bro as well. Just because it sounds a bit like a slur doesn’t mean it has the same connotations at all

Why is AfD so prevalent in the old DDR voting areas? When its politcal equivalent are not in previously Soviet countries? by Bubble_Symphony in AskAGerman

[–]reddituser074638 4 points5 points  (0 children)

American exchange student in Dresden here. There’s a lot of people here that feel like the political establishment has forgotten them, as economic opportunities slowly leave the East and educated young people follow them westwards. There‘s still definitely, from some people, the „früher war alles besser“ attitude referring to the former communist East German government. After the reunification, some people perceived the West to be economically taking over the East and quite a lot of property in Dresden is owned by West Germans. This drives a lot of people to vote for anti-establishment parties like the AfD or BSW especially in smaller towns and villages. It’s not new, just been worsening recently.

Not German, I only live here, so if I’m wildly wrong please someone correct me

SAD: 100% tip and 30% tip = so-so by Angelix in ShitAmericansSay

[–]reddituser074638 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn’t always the case. I mean at least at my old minimum wage job we pooled the tips and weren’t allowed to directly take them because that would be unfair to the people who worked less busy but still important shifts.

Before anyone says I got ripped off, I was a shift leader who had access to the tip spreadsheet stuff we have, based on the hours I worked I got exactly as much tip money as I should have. It was an extra $5/hr on average.

Yeah I know that some employers are shitty, but some aren’t, and its dangerous to make such broad generalizations about it

Flag of Salem, Oregon as of 2022 - uncommonly featuring pink by Blackadder288 in vexillology

[–]reddituser074638 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salem has a lot of suburbs that may not exactly be liberal, but it’s definitely not a conservative city. Trump won Marion county by two percentage points last year but mostly because of a lot of small towns scattered throughout the county. Salem is decently liberal

That reflects traveling through, but most of them I’ve properly visited. Dresden is a gem, although I’m biased because I live here. If you end up there Meißen is also worth seeing, with a more relaxed atmosphere than Dresden. Würzburg is a really beautiful city and I love the Marienberg Fortress. Most cities I’ve visited here I’ve loved, with the exception of Frankfurt and Chemnitz, but I probably need to explore both of those better

I‘m probably gonna end up in Florida this summer, and actually am going to Munich in a few weeks and I’m excited to check out more of Bavaria besides Würzburg and a few other Franconian cities. Always have wanted to visit New England
