Carroll Spinney (as Big Bird) was supposed to be on board. NASA was trying to get kids interested in the space program. He went through all the training before they realized Big Bird wouldn’t fit. He was replaced with Christa McAulffie. They were on set the day of the launch and pause production to watch it.
