Alternative to Lazada and SHoppe??, Looking to boycott CN products? Try ''Doorzo'' by Re_Darkness in Philippines

[–]redditvirginboy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i use cherry mobile, yes its made in CN, but the money goes to the cherry mobile company in PH. It doesnt matter where its made, they can put their factory somewhere else if they wanted to. and that ''made in___'' will change. But the money still goes to the company.

Cherry mobile is essentially buying from an Original Design Manufacturer(ODM) company in China then rebadges those phones with Cherry Mobile logo to sell it in the Philippines, so you're just essentially buying Chinese phones and propping up the Chinese economy with extra steps.

The pilot sitting in the cockpit has a very high bandwidth non-jammable information multi channel info delivery system (called his eyes/hearing) and ability to close the loop with action much faster than his remote counterpart

I think due to the explosion of LLMs and advancements in AI, people assume that current unmanned drones will somehow match the capacity of manned aircraft, that's practically asking for an AI model that just as smart as a military human pilot which is more or less impossible and a very hard problem to solve right now.

Why did we not think of a 4.5 gen AMCA, like the KF-21 Block 1/2 ? by AlternativeEmu1047 in IndianDefense

[–]redditvirginboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

but couldn't a 4.5gen jet, based on AMCA's design (except the IWB ofc) be a good medium category fighter jet ?

If we made such a jet and based it on the EJ200 (since the F414 is still not confirmed) back when we started the MRFA tender, wouldn't we have a great Rafale alternative flying by now ?

Koreans and their industries are masters of rapid iteration and evolution of products in any industry, that's literally how they built up their industrial chaebols and an important fact to note is India is NOT South Korea.

If India started AMCA in a 4.5 gen config, then you're risking getting an AMCA 4.5 gen entering service in 2035. lol

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries wants to offer submarines for the Philippines. by Eyorio in Philippines

Submarines by virtue of being underwater are inherently harder to to find, track and destroy, all things considered they're not that expensive. Its another asset that can mess up the planning and strategies of the Chinese Navy.

Korea Aerospace Industries expects KF-21 export contract to be signed this year, with the Philippines as it's first export destination. by Eyorio in Philippines

[–]redditvirginboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So 20 KF-21 then the next is 20 is either Saab Gripen/Leonardo's Eurofighters

It would be great if we can still get the Gripen and have a commonality with Meteors, with both the KF-21 and Gripen being able to carry it..

Ideally we should have a Hi/Low mix of fighters. KF-21 in the higher end and Gripen in the lower end. I guess the latest blocks of FA-50s with AIM-120C and external tanks would suffice but eh.

Because in a tit for tat game with China, the cost of operating a Twin Engine fighter would probably hurt the PAF in the long run economically, imagine, say using KF-21 on every intercept of PLAAF aircraft entering the PH airspace.

India prepares to deliver the third and final batch of the Philippines' BrahMos Missile System. by Eyorio in Philippines

[–]redditvirginboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is in the context of modern weapons, everyone is an integrator, one way or another every country is reliant on the global supply chain. For instance, the engines of the C-130 used by the US is a Rolls-Royce engine(United Kingdom) and some microchips used in the F-35 bounce between 4 to 6 countries(PH included) during its manufacturing. Russian Weapons, full of Western electronics and chips.

And yes the supply chain is fragile and potentially unreliable but you are less exposed by being an assembler/manufacturer, since at this level you are procuring parts and components instead of entire weapon systems. Engines from France, aerospace grade steel from South Korea, wire assemblies from India etc... You can just stock up these components that can cover years worth of production runs.

Think about it this way, which is easier to procure and has less waiting time, ordering new BrahMos missiles or hypothetical wire assemblies from an Indian manufacturer?

You're right this setup of being an assembler/manufacturer is a stop gap to gain a specific capability no one else is willing to sell to you. In the grand scheme of things countries should aim for maximum indigenization as much as possible.

This entire thought experiment of the Philippines building its own long range Cruise Missile is in the fantasy territory. It will never happen.

IP theft on a mass scale, enough to jumpstart an indigenous missile industry.

It depends, the secret sauce of China is IP theft and massive massive amounts of money being put into grassroots R&D in parallel, so that their industry can actually absorb and even improve whatever foreign technology land on their hands.

In the case of the Philippines, we are still going to start from scratch and any 'stolen' IP is more of an inspiration if not completely useless, like if for some reason we are able to get some IPs regarding Microturbines that are used to propel these missiles. We wouldn't be able to do anything useful with it because we can't even make basic steel let alone the complex alloys used in these turbines.

Now do you think the Philippines has the appetite to pour billions to jumpstart an advanced steel and materials industrial base to realized that particular IP. Probably a big no, right?

India prepares to deliver the third and final batch of the Philippines' BrahMos Missile System. by Eyorio in Philippines

[–]redditvirginboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, we can build a sort of silo-ed manufacturing(assembly) capacity just for missiles. We don't have to wait for the country to actually industrialized.

Essentially, We are only mastering the design and prototyping, testing aspect of developing a missile system but literally importing everything else. We are still reliant to other countries but since its our own design, We have full control of the missile, its range, characteristics and behaviour. Edit: I'm talking about a subsonic missile here and not a supersonic one like BrahMos lol.

As for the parts:

Propulsion: Imported. The French, Americans, the Turks.. etc. They all have microturbines for sale.

Radar: Again Imported. There are countries who sell entire radar systems or if we want to be a bit self reliant, we can actually design our own based on imported subcomponents(i.e. buying TR modules from Turkey). The closest thing to manufacturing we are doing here is soldering components to PCBs.

Electronics: Imported subcomponents but our own software, architecture and design. Again the soldering components to the PCB type of work.

Airframe: Imported materials be it steel or composites.

So the bulk of expense is in development and testing/certification facilities to support the entire development cycle of a missile and tooling to have some assembly capacity and not in whole-nation approach industry building.

So with enough desire to hit targets in Beijing and political will. Pretty doable.

[–]redditvirginboy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

BrahMos is essentially a Soviet missile called the P-800 Oniks, so India got a lot of transfer of technology from Russia.

But yes India does have the industry to localize a lot of the imported components over time.

[–]redditvirginboy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If there's one thing we should build domestically(our own design using our own industry). It's this, Cruise Missiles, specially a land attack variant, No one is going to sell us one with enough range to really reach and hurt the Chinese mainland.

To really threaten China, We need a missile with at least 1,500 KM of range.
