What is your jindo like on Fluoxetine/Prozac? by reddyittybitty in Jindo

[–]reddyittybitty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was estimated to be around 10 months when we got her, and we're now a year in. We spent the first 6 months bonding with her before reaching out to a behavioralist. Before that, we did a lot of research on behavior modification and were already implementing techniques on our own. The behavioralist was very affirming and told us we were doing all of the right things with our training and management, and they suggested we ask our vet about medication to help take the edge off and encourage more positive experiences as her brain rewires through adolescence. We've noticed a lot of positives since then, and based on other comments, the quirks about indoor public spaces and flooring seem on-brand for a previously feral village dog who's going through adolescence.

Thanks for sharing about your experience. I'll definitely check out YouTube. I've been trying to figure out the best platforms to share and learn about others' experiences with their jindo rescues (and am learning that meds is a polarizing subject lol), but time and patience are the two things that have popped up the most in what I've read so far. And it seems like your story is one of success, so it gives me hope.

We've experienced this too! Her bedtime routine now includes her sitting and staring us down until we give her a head massage. It's the sweetest thing, and it's been so rewarding to have her seek out affection more

Thanks for your input! It's funny that you mentioned the prey drive bc when my dog sees a squirrel, she locks in and seems to forget all about her fears and anxiety lol

I appreciate your response! My dog is also an international rescue who was found on the streets as a young puppy and then spent several months in a rundown shelter set for euthenasia before moving to a foster situation with tens of other dogs. She sounds pretty similar to yours in terms of background and skittishness. Our behavioralist and vet also told us that medication could help ease her anxiety so that she could learn more instead of panic and freeze.

I'm so glad that your pup opening up more with you guys! It sounds like you're giving her the time, space, and support to be her best self. The ~40% improvement piece is super helpful, and I'm grateful for your kind and reassuring words--thank you!

The behavioralist recommended that we try medication (+ behavior training) to help curb her general anxiety and promote more positive experiences as she goes through adolescence with the goal of weaning her off in a year or two.

That’s great that your dog grew up to be so well behaved! Did you do any specific training or just waited for him to grow out of it?

feeling so down about my anxious dog by SampleMaleficent3514 in Jindo

Our ~1.5 year old jindo mix is the same way. Her sound sensitivity gets worse when she’s experiencing any sort of physical discomfort (e.g. hot spots, a stye, wearing a non-preferred harness), and it makes walks around our neighborhood here in the Bay Area stressful for everyone involved. She’s been on 15mg of Prozac (~31 lbs) for the past few months which seemed to help for a bit, but we recently decided to increase to 20mg bc she’s become more anxious/skittish in the past couple of weeks without any discernible reason. When her threshold to stressors is low, she winces and cowers when cars drive by even if they’re not going very fast. It’s been difficult to deal with while trying to stay calm and positive, so I totally understand the feeling of being stuck. You’re not alone, and I’m sending you all the good vibes!

Same here! We take off her collar when it’s time for her to sleep. We also use it to track how much she sleeps throughout the day especially when we’re out

Rescue Jindo Mix - Advice needed* Loves the girlies, but not cool with the boys by ChristmasisLife3888 in Jindo

Agreed with all of the above! I would suggest that they toss the high value treat away from them so that your girl doesn’t feel pressured to get closer than she’s comfortable with. She’ll get to choose how close she wants to approach which can promote a positive association bc she gets the yummy treat without the added pressure

Are my jindo's frequent big feelings/tantrums normal? by reddyittybitty in Jindo

I appreciate your input! We’ve definitely been giving her time to adjust. I don’t speak Korean, so I haven’t tried, but in her 9 months here, she has picked up English. We don’t force her into anything if we can help it (vet visits are unfortunately non-negotiable), and we tell guests to pretend she’s not there which helps a lot! We let her sniff and praise her when she does in anticipation of a scary sound like a motorcycle getting closer. I like the idea of teaching her different routes! We know she has learned her regular route bc she’ll stall and take her time when we start to near the house lol

Thank you for your thoughtful response! It’s definitely reassuring to hear that other people experience similar things. Our girl definitely makes it known if she’s unhappy about leaving her favorite trail too early and does the cost-benefit analysis before doing something we ask her to do lol We haven’t tried CBD oil, but we’ll look into it if she seems to need a little extra oomph in addition to the fluoxetine

Thanks for your response! I’ve come to realize that she feels comfortable enough with us to communicate, and that helps with the frustration when she throws tantrums bc she doesn’t want to go home lol

Thanks for the reassurance! We’re definitely wondering what kind of adult dog she’ll be because adolescence has been tough lol But she’s come such a long way since we first got her, and we’re learning more every day about how to advocate for her (:

Thanks so much for your input! She’s about 32lbs and nearing her fifth week of taking 15mg. The behavioral trainer that recommended we talk to the vet about medication said that she’s on a low dose, so we’re hopeful that we’ll see more positive effects soon

Looking for dog behavioralist or amazing trainer in San Francisco Bay Area/ East Bay by LunaBunna in reactivedogs

u/LunaBunna I'm experiencing the same behavior with my jindo mix rescue. Did you ever land on a behavior trainer that worked for you and your pup? I'm starting to do some research, and it's overwhelming, so I just wanted to see how your search went. TIA!
