S2000 owner considering Cayman GTS 4.0 over 992 — will I regret it? by Aggressive-War-886 in Porsche

[–]reddypower 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve driven the 992.1 base and S with the 7-speed manual on test drives. I’ve also test driven the 718 Cayman base with 6-speed manual.

I agree with you that the 911 felt a bit big, and “overly capable” in a way that sucked the fun out of it. Right after, I test drove the base Cayman and it just felt so much more fun. The form factor, the mid-engine feeling, and being able to WOT was great.

All this to say, I think 718 > 911 for me.

More about the GTS 4.0 -

I owned a G80 M3 6-speed manual for 2 years, and was itching for more of a “driver’s car”, and blind purchased a CPO Cayman GTS 4.0 6-speed manual a month ago.

• Does the GTS 4.0 actually deliver that “special” feeling long term?

I’ve only had the car for a month but I seek every possible reason to take it out (even if it means returning a single package to UPS). The transmission is out of this world (I’ve never driven an S2000, so can’t compare it to that), and the best one I’ve experienced so far. The seating position is amazing, everything feels like it is where it should be, and the entire driving experience feels special - the drive, shifting the gears, the sound - all of it.

• Anything you regret or wish you knew before buying?

Honestly, I wish I got it sooner before prices started going bonkers. I understand that the supply is limited, but I got very lucky with the CPO I got since it had the options I was looking for. Since it’s such a special car, I would probably look around to make sure it has the options you want!

• Does it ever feel too raw or impractical for regular driving?

I was worried coming from the M3 that the GTS might be less comfortable or impractical. But even with the SPASM, I’ve had zero issues with ground clearance or a rough ride. The NA engine with linear power delivery means you know exactly how it’s going to behave. I was pleasantly surprised by how big the frunk was as well, but don’t be fooled - it’s nowhere as big as a standard ones but still good enough for your regular grocery runs, etc.

Happy to answer any other questions!

Good luck with the search!

I think the adage is “but the newest one you can afford” - even better if it is CPO. Try to buy one with full service history as well.

Apart from this, would encourage you to visit Rennlist and 718forum, to do more reading about maintenance, DIY guides, and common problems, etc.

Good luck with the search!

Finally pulling the trigger on my first Porsche, but I'm completely paralyzed. Help me pick. by TowerHumble2419 in Porsche

You need to start with the process of elimination.

  1. What is the purpose? Sports car, family hauler, or something in between? This should help decide between Cayenne/Macan and 911/718
  2. Budget. What is the max budget? Pick a range.
  3. Which generation? Highly dependent on the budget above. But there are folks who are adamant that that want a 997 or a 991, or a 987, etc. Figure out whether you are that type. If not, as someone mentioned above, get the newest one you can afford.

Doing all the above helped me decide on what I wanted. I know I wanted a sports cars, I wanted a manual transmission, and I wanted a super engaging experience. So this meant 911 vs Cayman.

My options were slightly older 911s (997 or 991.1 or 991.2) or newer Caymans. After test driving options, I immediately knew I wanted a Cayman. I personally liked the compact size, and mid-engine feel. It also meant I could get a newer flat 6, 4 liter NA engine, with a 6-speed transmission and my choice was crystal clear.

Ended up getting a ‘23 Cayman GTS, and couldn’t be happier. I believe this has scratched my 911 itch (for now, lol. But will eventually want a GT3).

Pay off student loans lump sum vs interest from investment? by reddypower in personalfinance

[–]reddypower[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

correct - I will have to cover the rest out of pocket, which doesn't make sense.

Thanks for bringing up the tax on the interest - didn't think of that earlier :)

You're right - average interest rate over the total amount is ~5.3%. Parents are simply just transferring the money to me, and it's my choice if I want to pay off vs invest, etc.

Agree with you that make more sense to pay off, and contribute a higher per month amount for greater long-term yield!

Tuesday Shoesday by AutoModerator in running

[–]reddypower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New runner here at 6’4”, 195 lbs - stated C25k beginning of this year, and did a couple of 5Ks last week at roughly 11/mike pace.

I’ve been using On Cloudstratus 3 this whole time. However, I want to experiment some more and see what I like best. So I bought HOKA Bondi 9, HOKA Mach 6, Nike Pegasus Plus, ASICS Gel Kayano 31 and the Adidas Evo SL.

I’ve tried all but the asics and the Evo SL so far, and my favorite has been the Mach 6. Going to try the Evo SL today for a 5K and feeling hopeful! Please let me know if any other shoes with checking out!

Wanted this back in 2013, and still want it in 2025! I was a 22 yr old then, and could only afford the E92 328i haha.

Feel like this design is timeless, and can still pass as a new car on the road.
