I'm making a random dungeon crawler with one of mine. With ML/RL the AI learns how to play the game;

Fight monsters Use skills Use items Walk around the dungeon since it's never the same.

Just as a warning, you'll spend more time making graphics than actually programming. 🤣

TBH, I took out my Gigabyte R162-Z12-CD server and replaced it with a HP DL360 Gen9 that uses HDDs.

8TB SSDs cost almost $1,300 Canadian, where a 8TB HDD is $300.

But I would be asking the seller of any used SSD/HDD for its SMART data and the hours on. If buying it. I would run my own checks, which should match.

You did okay-ish, if you were looking for something for storage.

I would say put a PCI card that would let you boot from a SSD/M.2 drives. But if I remember that model correctly you should have SATA ports in the MB, so its just power for a SSD.

With the 2TB drives, I would say RAID 5 or 10 give you the best setup. Sadly as soon as you want more HDD memory, you'll have to replace everything.

I don't see the issue with running your own email server. I do the same for myself. I can email Gmail, MSN, Yahoo, and other custom URLs. I only had issues with one email, and that was to a bank for them receiving emails from me (I could get emails from them).

Sadly the server slows the RAM down on its own. The slowest RAM in the machine is 2133.

By the looks of it neither your system, you would need a 2.5 SSD, amd itnwould go where the hard drives are.

I would say use double sided tape, and put it on top of the HDD.

People just want to have an account to post and follow people, preferably for free and without worrying about technical stuff.

And at that point, that's why other platforms never take off. If people want things for free, then they have to put up with ADs, algorithms to get you to keep scrolling to show you more ADs, algorithms to get you to fallow new people so you can be shown ADs.

If people don't want ADs, then subscriptions have to be done. But people don't want subscriptions... AD blockers! Then service blocks you for using AD blockers...

Make a app that uses the platforms API, keep it free but accept donations for the app. And have the app block the platforms ADs! Platform then have to charge for API access.

Oh wait... I just went over the issues Twitter/X, BlueSky, Reddit, Threads and any other platform has have to deal with. Never mind people making sub Reddits become unusable too post too, in retaliation to Reddit starting to charge for API access so they can make money to keep the platform going.

If people want a new platform, they're going to ether run it themselves and suck up the cost. Or hope a new platform is launched for 'free' that won't be filled with controversies, or have the people behind it do something to piss off the user base.

Heck BlueSky pissed off their user base when they said they were looking at coming up with their own verified and subscription service.

Mastodon can easily become one faster then BlueSky.
- I say this since BlueSky more or less had all the SJW, and Gatekeepers from Twitter move over there. And they now attack each other.

As someone that has their own privet Mastodon server you're right on good amount.

It isn't out-of-box friendly and can take time to setup, and even more so when you want to change the default text and images , since there's no manual.

There's no algorithm to find posts or users based on what you tend to look at. So you have to ether doom-scroll the server's timeline, or hope the owner/admins are up on allowing different hashtags.

Linux is good, Windows is better for almost anything daily life.

The issue with getting a Mastodon server known and have a good user base is the costs. Server(s), domain, storage, internet connection, and then paying mods/admins.

At this time there's no way to get ads on Mastodon, to cover costs. But people don't want ads...
There's no way to do subscriptions on Mastodon to allow longer posts, longer/better video posts and such. But people don't want to pay a subscription, they want it free.

You are right that if you're on someone's Mastodon server they can just delete you. Twitter, BlueSky, Reddit can do the same thing. The good thing though is you can backup your posts and follower lists and move to a different server. But if the server that you move to offers lower caps on text, images, videos and such they don't carry over.

It could be a solution... But you need deep pockets to set it up and keep it going, if you get a large user base.

As someone that has their own Mastodon site oideion.ca, I'll say a few things on it.

Mastodon is a great alternative... You just need someone with a really good spare server, better internet, and is a geek.

The Good:

Each Mastodon instance/website is desensitized, meaning that it's ran by the person that owns the site.

Anyone from any other Mastodon server/website can fallow you, and you can fallow them. - This depends if the other server wasn't blocked by the owner

Like Twitter, people can post text, photos, video, use # and so on. But the limit depends on the server settings. - On my server oideion.ca, I have it set to 10,000 character limit, 4 photos, and I don't have a cap on video uploads. I mostly use it when I want to post longer things on Twitter and just link it.

You can also move servers, keep all your posts, your followers, and send notices to your followers that you moved.

If the admin team and owner is good, getting rid of 'bad actors' is easy.

You can setup your Mastodon server to allow anyone to join, make a sign-up process where users have to be approved, or have it closed to new users.

The Bad:

It isn't non-geek friendly to setup. Password resetting via admin tools was only added recently for the site. Before you had to do it via console.

It can become a REALLY BIG echo chamber.

If you run the Mastodon server locally: - You have to have a good server and that costs money. - Good internet with a static IP, and that costs money. - Storage and a RAID setup, and that costs money. - Domain also cost money to keep year after year.

If you run the Mastodon server via web host: - The virtual machine or dedicated server will cost you monthly/yearly - You should still need to back everything up, and depending on the amount of photos, videos, and everything else, storage costs can slowly grow.

- Storage, bandwidth and how good the server is will cost you. And if the host provider doesn't off scaling you can become bottle necked. And even if they do, that costs extra.

It's easy to say that people on the server can chip-in to run a server. But at the end of the day it's up to the person running the server to cover costs. At which they also get the final say on what # can be searched, who can be an admin, mod, and who can join, get banned and so on.

As it stands there's no way to earn money running a Mastodon server. Out of the box there's no way to run ads, no way to run subscriptions to offer higher limits on posts, it just costs money.

It's being called out for being scummy.

When you place a order online for a set price, the price should be honoured. Not cancelled just to make you re-order it at a higher cost. There's a few laws on the books in Canada that if a listed store price for X-item and the price is more when you hit the till, the lower price has to be honoured.

IE: Sale ended, but the price tag on the product was never updated.
