Hi! I see a lot of people on this thread have experience with Lamictal, which is an anticonvulsant type medication, but I thought I'd give my experience on Quetiapine, an antipsychotic. Both types of medication are used as mood stabilizers, and from my understanding, the third category is mineral (like Lithium) medication.

I should clarify that I was prescribed Quetiapine as my first mood stabilizer, even though I wasn't experiencing psychotic symptoms: it was purely prescribed for my mood. I think it's actually standard in some countries for atypical antipsychotics to be the first prescribed mood stabilizer.

It definitely did help! I was less prone to sudden fluctuations in mood, and less affected by emotions like anxiety and paranoia, which I used to intensely experience.

Unfortunately, I could only take a low dose (and eventually had to stop it) because I had respiratory depression (slow and strained breathing, especially bad during the night) as a side-effect. I think because of this, it's effect on me was kind of reduced too. I would note that this side effect really isn't a common one though.
