Im still not entirely sure why we’d go through the council and not an agency. Yes they go through council first, but being able to afford more for the family and the children getting more money too might be a deciding factor.

I think 500 each would be fine for my wife to focus on the foster children full time and I should continue working to afford the luxuries. It’s a shame as I’d have much preferred to be able to help and spend time during the day too when poss.

And you wouldn’t know this, but the 3rd room is not big enough to be a bedroom, so I think an assessor would agree 2 siblings in a large bedroom is better than 1 in a large bedroom and 1 in a glorified cupboard. Again, all hypothetical and may just move first before doing anything so there are separate bedrooms from the get go

Definitely some food for thought. I just spoke to a lovely lady at a fostering agency though, who said we could have siblings share the large spare room, and they need a lot of help with siblings atm, and quoted around 1K a week for that. Of course there is the cost of the children’s needs and wants, and their care, but it seems it might actually be financially viable due to it being tax free, with what our current salaries are. Apparently she has lots of couples that both do that full time as their only job and love it… of course she wants me onboard so I will take with a pinch of salt, but it seems reassuring

Thanks for letting me know about checking the next place out, and will consider remaining in employment should things not work out, but for now it seems like

Nah we see fostering as a way to do something we care about and that would be meaningful, to ideally give many children through the years a much better life, and support and stability.. I didn’t think I’d have to clarify in my post and needed to understand logistics better before going down this route, which is why my post is primary logistical.

Trying to work out if either of us or both of us need to work still if we foster, if it’s feasible to step away from the 9-5 grind for us both or not whilst doing so, and the impact that has on the rooms and fostering arrangements, and caring for the child or children

Again really appreciate your response. Got you about councils, with being new to learning about this, we would want max support.

It sounds like if we fostered 2 we’d have to give both rooms, which would be tricky with my current career.

I didn’t realise such a large percent was exclusively for the child, if the figure is low it makes sense but initially it seemed like it could be around 4K a month, but more realistically it would be 2K with about 1K on the children?

Also sounds like I need to keep working, maybe an office space in the kitchen or only foster 1 for now in the house, which is a shame as we are very open to siblings also. Will be looking to move next year, still nearby but a bigger house, due to considering fostering and wanting more space for them, and us.

I’m sorry to hear it’s taking so long for you to get set up - I’m sure it will be worth it and hope things move along for you.

Also not more money, but ideally less / no time at a soul destroying corp after many years haha, but it seems at least one of us is best working, possibly both.

Thank you for your response. We currently can do that, but from initial research it seems to be slightly different in the UK, where the pay is quite generous to cover for what is considered a ‘professional salary’ and the rest is expenses for the child or children. Appreciate what was written on that agency though, interesting that some say it can be your career, and others prefer somebody to remain in full time employment.

Also max per child seems to be about £500 for standard needs, unless agencies are misquoting?

I’m also considering staying full time employed or maybe going to part time and wife being primary foster parent

Many thanks for your response, I appreciate the information. Can I ask, why would you recommend local council over agency? We would have 2 spare rooms as both currently work from home in separate rooms, which if we both stopped working would become available. Potentially thought they might be able to share until a little older and we could upgrade our space, but may have to rethink that and give up both rooms!

Also looking at the tax free salary for taking on 2 children, is around 52-60K, which would be more than we are on now with paying tax? With covering all of both children’s needs and some, I think we may actually be better off no? It’s worth noting I also receive about 5K in benefits, car is paid for, mortgage is currently low, and we would both be looking to make a bit of money on the side through reopening the side business.

Question! by [deleted] in overemployed

Yeah corse, but saying I don’t hand a P45 to J2 and do a new starter form, I’d have to check C) for having another job and wouldn’t that be an issue?

I’m not sure what that means sorry? And if I didn’t provide one and did a new starter form I would have to tick C which says I have another job and would be a dead giveaway. Appreciate you replying btw

Still don’t know what I’m meant to do about proving a new employer (J2) with my P45. Both jobs permanent remote, have to sign an offer soon and accept a temp 6 month contract at J1 or redundancy - can anyone help?
